Patrick Viera - really starting to look the part

I watched the game on telly, when he came out for the 2nd half my telly almost went through the window onto the drive. I come on here for some informed opinion from you people lucky enough to go to the match and come across a post like this! I may as well just read the write up in the fookin daily mirror.

I thought against Fulham that Vieira was starting to look the part, but after last nights showing its pretty obvious that he will only ever be a shadow of the player he was at his peak.
The opposition were drifting past him as if he wasnt there, unable to get close enough to them to put in a tackle.
His passing was ok at times and woeful at others.
And I didnt see any great leadership from him when we were struggling in the first half - I guess its hard to have a pop at others when you know they are carrying you.
A poor signing all told. I hope Mancini doesnt feel that he has to play him because he signed him...

I don't know who to believe!

Mancini - Italian International - Numerous honours and medals obviously rates him highly.
Gary Speed who I spoke to after the game and thought Vierra added control, calm and vision

or you lot?

If a young player had played as little as Vierra or had come over from a slower league - I think people would be more understanding of the few misplaced passes towards the end.
He got another good 90 mins in last night and thought he did ok.

I think he has a part to play, coming on for the last 20 mins to calm a game down but last night he was so far off the pace, a few nice passes doesn't cover for that imo.

I actually agree with the OP. Viera organises our midfield far better than barry or de jong. He gets back and covers and provides some excellent passes, think he will do a great job for us.

Does a few Hollywood tackles from De Jong cover up the fact that he didn't pressure Wigan at all and dragged the midfield so far back that Given nearly had to watch his toes didn't get stepped on!

he was absoloutely crap he did not win one tackle all night and did not seem interested. he should be on his way and never pull on a blue shirt again for us. i would not pay him in washers. its becoming apparent we need to get rid of quite a few to be considered real challengers. swp being one which i thought i would never say, toure, vierra, santa cruz, garrido, sylvinho, richards, taylor,. we should be building the team round given, barry, johnson, tevez , bellamy, de jong, kompany fill in the rest of the blanks as u see fit.

No but this thread wasn't about De Jong, I don't really think NDJ can play in a midfield 4 but he's awesome in a 5.

He may be slow and opposition players did get past him easily. but this was because we only had the midfield 2.

His passing, however, is excellent. Apart from the obvious couple misplaced and one went out of play. He has provided several assists since arriving at the club and provides a more thoughtful and incisive final ball than either de jong or barry.

It is plain to see, that Hughes didn't have enough in midfield. With only de jong barry and ireland that is not enough to last a season.

United have, carrick, scholes, fletcher, anderson and at a push gibson. Baconface has rotated them all season so they are fresh.

Barry has played every game but 2 including last night. And every England game for full 90minutes. De jong has also played most games plus internationals. Hughes left us light in the middle.

We also lack creativity from the middle and with his superior passing Vieira provides this more than the other limited options.

on a side note, RE: Ade, I watched him for a bit last night rather than the action (while Vieira gave it away) and he does make good runs that aren't always noticed. In fact, Vieira is the only play that seems to spot these runs.

Some bad passes last night, but did have a hand in all 3 goals I think?

Generally a very positive contribution in a small midfield selection with no playmaker available.

I think he and De Jong (and Ireland) belong in 3 man midfields, but not at the same time, 2 of them together in a 2 man central midfield isn't good.

Vieira when we're likely to dominate possession anyway, and need someone who can play the ball around a bit, and De Jong when the midfield will be a battle.

If we are going for a 2 man midfield i'd go for Zab and Barry.

Are you having a laugh mate? If Stevie Wonder was at the game last night, he could of told you Viera was muck..Totally of the pace of modern day prem football!!!

-- Tue Mar 30, 2010 4:51 pm --

Are you having a laugh mate? If Vieira plays in the World Cup, we wont have to have worry about France progressing from the groups.

Shows how good he is now when he can struggles with the likes on Wigan. He should have done a Claude and gone home.

I`ll go with the OP, though a great game may be a touch too kind, he is a class act that is short on any kind of pace..........an while you can pick out passes going wrong, thats because they are for the most part dependant on being read,

Him an Tevez look to be on the same wave lenth, as does Adie but he had a bad game last night with a month out showing in his poor first touch.
