You’re spouting more bollocks. He did have a tendency to drift in and out of games at times but when he was match fit and sharp . He was a more influential midfielder than any midfielder today . He had the unique ability to play as a deep midfielder and dictate and control the tempo of game , while having the ability to go on a dribbling run and slice open a defence with a through ball or shoot at goal . Also his defensive side of the game was very underrated , he could sniff out danger and put tackles in . A work rate and stamina second to none . He could run all day and not get tired .
I suppose the midfielder that would be most similar to him today is pogba . But unlike pogba he had positional and tactical awareness he didn't need to be babysit-ted and he was better at finding time and space . Much better reader of a game, knew when to keep it simple and much better defensively and unlike pogba he could control the tempo of a game , speed it up slow it down etc,
I can think of two players that could/can do everything that you claim the Geordie wastrel could do, without even having to look further than the team I support.
David "Merlin" Silva and Kevin de Bruyne.
Gascoinge was not unique in that respect.
