Paul Gascoigne - terrible waste

He really did influence games for England as well even past his prime in euro 96. People say he didn't win anything for England. What England player did apart from Bobby Charlton.

I would say gazza has been England's best and most influential since Bobby Charlton.

Scholes, beckham, lampard, gerrard have had much more successful careers for their clubs. But none of them came anywhere near to gazzas influence on the
national team.

For all the hype about beckham being England's great hope and one of the worlds greatest players. He was anonymous in all the international tournaments he played in.

The English press and pundits were building him up to the player that gazza actual was. It was an absolute joke.

I don't know what other countries must have been thinking when they saw that a player of such limited ability was been hyped like that by the English media and pundits.
Gordon Banks, George Cohen, Ray Wilson, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore, Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball, Martin Peters, Roger Hunt and Geoff Hurst.

When i talk about winning things . I am talking about being the deciding factor . Bobby Charlton was the player of the tournament when England won in 66.

Though it pains me to say it Becham delivered for England in that 2-2 draw with Greece, he was all over the pitch and then that freekick, if not for that it would have been another embarrassment of not qualifying.

You have to remember that the players don't ask for these comparisons either, not that I can even recall them comparing him to Gazza, hell, Becham wasn't even a dribbler, well not on the pitch anyway lol
Beckham scored a free kick in that game after missing about seven others . Other than that he ran around like a headless chicken . In all the tournaments he played in he never had one outstanding match . Gazza had many outstanding matches in international tournament football.

I never said Gazza didn't.

One man's headless chicken, is another man's, he was all over the pitch, the fact is, he put the freekick away with virtually the last kick of the game to send us to the world cup and that is all I said.

Never mind Gascoigne there is the biggest waste in English football - a team that WON the World Cup retired and scattered to the winds to play lower league or what at the time was comedy football in the States then left to manage lower league teams then fade away - other countries have integrated their winners into the national set up to try and boost their future chances.

Of that team only Jack Charlton as an international manager and Alan Ball who at least managed us the rest were left to wither on the vine dragged out only when it suited the FA to cover some anniversary or other

My recollection of gazza is that he produced many outstanding moments, but (generally) wasn't particularly influential over whole games and the liability of his temperament often outweighed the impact of his genius. It was 30 yrs ago though

He did have a tendency to drift in and out of games at times but when he was match fit and sharp . He was a more influential midfielder than any midfielder today . He had the unique ability to play as a deep midfielder and dictate and control the tempo of game , while having the ability to go on a dribbling run and slice open a defence with a through ball or shoot at goal . Also his defensive side of the game was very underrated , he could sniff out danger and put tackles in . A work rate and stamina second to none . He could run all day and not get tired .

I suppose the midfielder that would be most similar to him today is pogba . But unlike pogba he had positional and tactical awareness he didn't need to be babysit-ted and he was better at finding time and space . Much better reader of a game, knew when to keep it simple and much better defensively and unlike pogba he could control the tempo of a game , speed it up slow it down etc,

You’re absolutely right about that. I drew beckham in a sweep stake for the Greece game and had to drink every time he booted it into touch. So much so I had to involuntarily consult with Shanks at short notice.
