Paul Simpson

He’s originally from that neck of the woods iirc
Remember being in the Platt Lane as a kid and watching his debut for City as a 16 year old, set up the winning goal at that end
Yeah I was in Platt Lane for that too.
He had a great debut but then hardly featured for well over 2 years which was the promotion run in.

Yeah weird how he was marginalised until McNeill finally gave him a go. No exaggeration to say him coming into the team late on revitalised the group and probably got us over the line that season. Six goals in 10 games.
Scored 9 in the first division the following season as well.
Again he seemed to be scapegoated and marginalised as we went down the following year and like many of our best young players in the 80s and 90s, was let go far too young and too cheaply

Never seen him play for us but know a good few fellow blues who bemoaned his departure, great to hear he's recovered from his illness always seemed a top bloke and genuinely down to earth over the years in interviews he given.

Can tell he loved playing football the right way as a player when I saw him for other clubs on lower league highlight shows and as a manager too his team's generally play good football, maybe if we're hiring we could do a lot worse than get him behind the scenes at youth level bring him back where he began, he knows what the club is all about and has a good track record with youth players.

Got a few mates who are Derby fans and he was absolutely loved down there

Yes he is. He's from Cockermouth. In addition to Scott Carson, John Burridge was another one-time City goalie to come from Cumbria.

I remember budgie coming on loan while Coton and others were injured got the 94/95 season review on tape he has a crackin interview on that, I've not watched it in at least a decade old video player is broke and it's not on YouTube anywhere though or I can't find it... He described playing for City against Newcastle where he spent many years and it goes along the lines of something like this.

"Aww it was brilliant (or amazing), the City fans were cheering, the Newcastle fans were cheering, it were like Forrest Gump I wanted to cry."

Pure gold that interview made me laugh his description but completely understood what he was saying, what it meant to him at the same time he was emotional and absolutely loved it.

He was long long past it when he came to us but fair to say he was a character

I was behind the goal at Portsmouth 1985. Simmo.
Christ when I saw this thread that was the first thing I thought of. I was based in Pompey at the time so easy for me to get to that one Made the mistake of breaking ranks on the way out to get back to Copnor I came close to getting lynched by the angry locals.

Had the pleasure of bumping into Simmo one night in a bar called Fobs in Didsbury,.. probably long closed now. Anyhow, he was a great bloke, had a good chat with me and my mates, and and left us with a good impression.
Really pleased he is now in good health !
