Penalty Taker

Who should take penalties if Haaland is not on the pitch?

What's Aguero's last 10-15 penalties look like? I swear the issues only recently started to get out of hand but that may be my mind playing tricks on me.
No, you are right.

He has missed 3 of his last 7.

Only missed 1 of the previous 12.

The trouble is that penalty practice by every player in the squad delivers 100% success -and then they get a real one and all the practice in the world isn't worth a Salah two and a half somersaults with two and a half twists off the ten metre board. It just goes to shit!
Im not sure I fully understand what a City penalty has to do with Salah acting like he has been shot by a sniper, or why pro players who practice a simple task would go to shit, but penalties have been being scored for over a century by all and sundry, and we have recently made it even harder on keepers, so just take the shot/pass!!!

On a team that passes over 600 times per game, with 90% accuracy, it is unfathomable that we can’t find a single player to confidently pass a ball into an almost open goal! It is insane!

The Salah connection is simply another opportunity to 'out' the diving bastard whenever the word 'penalty' is used, no matter what the context. But the number of professionals going to shit when penalties are awarded is not rare. City have just been better at missing them than others over the last couple of seasons. I don't understand why, either.

Given that across the history of the Premier League (all clubs), 83% of penalties have been scored ... it means that all our takers are below average, except Rodri ... and he would be on zero % if Lloris had strong hands.

We're definitely doing something wrong !

Thinking about recent misses by KDB and Gundogan, it looked like they were maybe trying to be too accurate / hit the corner of the net .... when really you just need to get it on target, and most of the time it will go in, even if fairly central.

It isn't the full stats as Serg has had penalties that have been on target and gone in which count as misses, and most of the players haven't missed in shoot outs and they have not been counted either.

Unpopular opinion, Kev scuffed his one in Madrid.

If Ederson is the best at them in training then it's him, 'keeper or not. Sure he'd twat an absolute thunderbastard so the chances of it bouncing into open play would be low

Alan Harper was the best in training too.

If Ederson hits a thunderbastard against the bar it would probably end up as an own goal (though I think that would actually be a corner according to the Laws).

I would seriously try ederson, what is happening with us and penalties is beyond belief, why are the such good players we have so bad at taking a pen.

it was terrible against spurs to see a non penalty taker like rodri step up and somehow score from a kick 9 times out of 10 would have been saved. Why do the players queue up and argue who takes a free kick but yet nowhere to be seen for a spot kick ?

surely this is being addressed.

It would be a corner but refs have go it wrong in the past like when Enckelman missed the throw-in back to him.

I don't see why Rodri would not take the next one.

Yeah, it was a bit of a jammy one, but why the hell is one successful penalty enough to decide someone isn't good enough? This is most of the problem, as soon as someone misses they get taken off penalties, now we've moved on to not scoring well enough.

People are really overthinking this "natural penalty taker" business. It's a skill like any other, you practice and you get better.

What we need to do is just pick someone and stick with them. Rodri is always on the pitch, so he's a good choice. We know he can hit the ball cleanly, just give him all penalties until the end of the season, make him do 30 minutes practice every day and then review it when there's been a decent sample size.

Pep basically shot down the chances of Rodri taking another one, no?

I was surprised at how poor it was, he could be a good option with some more practice.

Bernie would pass it into the side of the net 9 times out of ten. He’s probably hit the post with the other. I’d settle for that strike rate

Ederson might be good at taking penalties, but he is the goalkeeper. If he is out of his net, we have a problem.

One day, the ball will either hit a post or be saved and then cleared. The opposition will then be able to have a good counter on our goal with a high chance of scoring - not quite as high as a penalty, but not far off. There's also a real chance one of our defenders will have to haul someone down and be booked/sent off.

I don't see why a player who can feel confident taking a free kick 30yards out with a wall and a goalkeeper to beat can't do it 12 yards out with just a goalkeeper to beat. I honestly think half the time we're being too clever with them.

The team either need to practice taking them for an hour a day, every day after training or they need to throw the dice and smash it as hard as they physically can at the net. There are no other options. It should always be a player with good mental strength who tends to play well too - Dias, Walker, Fernandinho, Rodri, Aguero for me. Someone who is not going to bottle it.

I'm starting to feel this Ederson-taking-penalties is something that will start to weigh on players if they miss them as well.

Ederson can take them once the league is won, before that he should concentrate on keeping the ball out of his net.

Kev, Aguero, Gundog for me. But mainly, make sure it's clear before the game, don't fuck about giving it to Rodri or talking about Eddie, and stick to one or two so they know Pep has confidence in them.
