Pep’s next evolution

The Athletic did a piece on new formation by Pep today.
Just have to look at that picture to see it's going to be a useless article oversimplified and completely failing to understand our tactics. We're a bit past formations at this point and anyone who thinks we're sticking to any one shape in any of defence, transitions or attack shouldn't be writing articles on tactics.

ederson had to go long as Burnley marked not just our CBs but our two midfielders and fullbacks too.

I agree the team makes more than four changes in game. The fluidity and adapting to opponents is something that say Man United at their peak didn’t do. We have tactically flexible and intelligent crop of players. We definitely are the standard these days and you can see Arteta and Arsenal are doing everything to replicate this with squad building. Rice is being called Beckenbaur now which says it all.

I think apart from formations and stuff peps gonna focus a lot of further developing the direct balls into Haaland, improving set pieces and most important of all, a particular focus on ball carrying as a means to break out of increasingly complex and coordinated presses by opposition teams. Hence the purchase of Kovacic and Gvardiol so far in the window.

With Gvardiol in the squad Pep has the team of midfielders he's always wanted. Both him and Stones can dribble the ball, keep it under pressure and play attacking passes. Gvardiol is probably a better player going forwards and Stones is better at the DM side of that role. But with both in the team it would enable us to get more players in support of Haaland and it also means we can play more direct to Haaland and remain in a shape to prevent the counter attack.

Ederson went long a fair few times on Friday. We're dangerous from set pieces and from the moment Pep nailed the tactics last season to the squad we have now we're the most balanced we've ever been with him in charge which should worry the rest of Europe. That soft centre is gone. That ability to run through us doesn't exist. We don't pass it to death and run out of options. We've got so many strings to our bow.

Great tactical insight with new changes team is playing with moving on from box midfield analysis from first chamipions
Leave game against Red star.
