I don’t blame Pep too much for yesterday in terms of the set up. He was clearly wary of being done on the counter, particularly given last season where we got done twice by it. I don’t think we were particularly cautious though, not compared to United and I thought Neville was wrong on the commentary. We were still operating twenty yards further up the pitch than they were and created the much better chances.
Ultimately results drive perception though - had one of De Bruyne or Mahrez scored, it would have been seen as a great win away at a team we struggled against last season and a sign of losing that naivety of leaving ourselves too open. The only change I’d have made was bring Sterling off around the same time as Mahrez.
I didn’t like the football particularly. I could understand it though and part of me is quite happy that we can play that style when we need to. If we did it every game then I’d be concerned, I’m more concerned by individual performances than I am pep at the mo though.
