If Sky/bt/bbc punditry did even a 100th of that they’d still have a 1000 times better output on discussing football tactics, rather than ‘he kicked the ball into the space and then ran onto it, great play by United there’

Spielverlagerung has serious pedigree. Two of the biggest contributors 4 or 5 years ago are Tom Payne - formerly head of analytics at Huddersfield Town, now doing analytics for the FA - and Rene Maric - who is Borussia Monchengladbach's assistant manager and moving with Marco Rose to Dortmund.

I haven't been reading it much lately because I think they slowed down posting Premier League/City related content for a while when those two left, but seems like they back with a bang, and interesting to see Rene Maric contributed to this article.

Before this season Pep has always favored the W-W shape in our team. Or if you put it in numbers it's 2-3-2-3. This season, for more defensive stability, Pep flipped it into a W-M shape, thus 3-2-2-3. It's such a simple, and elegant solution to his problems, very Pep-esque.

I was thinking as I read it, Pep's just gone back in time and adopted the WM, he's not done anything new at all. Of course, in the days of the original WM, not everyone plus the goalkeeper could play ball like our players.

The article is not the easiest read and I think I'll need to revisit it a few times and look at some of the linked articles. However, if it's thesis is correct, City could become almost unstoppable if they make the kinds of signings being talked about.

This is a 4 part article for those interested in tactics and Pep’s in particular.

The link is part 3 which is when City kick in but if you like this sort of thing parts 1 and 2 (pre City) are very good too.

It tries to answer the question of whether Pep overthinks in the CL, what goes wrong, what goes right and what may happen going forward.

He is human, players and opponents are too. That's why nothing is perfect.

After reading all 4 parts I think it can be summed up (rather poorly by me) as most of the time Pep has a 70% chance of winning so doesn’t have to make too many tactical changes as his teams are setup so well that very few teams can cope.

When he gets to the last eight in the CL those chances drop to 60% so Pep tries to get the chances of winning back up to 70% by making more changes than usual. If the players understand the new tactics then the probability goes back to 70% but if they don’t they can fall down to 40%.

The article seems to suggest that a constant 60% will win the CL quicker than a 70/40 spread.

The article doesn’t explicitly say that but I think that’s the gist.

Bernardo should have played as RCM..

Two false 9s was incorrect decision..
