Was it the system that wasn’t working or the players not doing the right things within the system?

He didn’t change it but we got back in the game and could have won it by not changing the system.

I thought the players were poor today, often everything started up for Newcastle with a poor pass from us or a reluctance to make the right pass. Newcastle exploited space where the full backs weren’t occupying but if we hadn’t given the ball away or if we’d made the right pass those situations for Newcastle wouldn’t have occurred.

I agree. We started well, and it looked like it could be a rout. But then we began giving the ball away all over the place, and they gained a foothold. Once they did, they exploited the space out wide well.
Of course there’s an argument that, given how we were playing, Pep could / should have changed the shape. But it’s hardly his way - I’m sure the thrust at halftime was to demand the players do things better.

KDB and Gundo are playing higher on the pitch, fullbacks are playing deeper to cover the zones...

Last year it was different, Bernardo was playing deeper and alongside Rodri... So Cancelo had space to play higher..

Walker isn't the type to play with his back to the game. His strengths are coming onto the ball and going forward.
He looks like Raz in front of an open net.

We get the ball opponents retreat deep and it works. If the opponent attacks the ball deep we are too slow and physically outgunned.

Should have read the game better and avoided them taking over the game.

For a period the players didnt execute our game plan and hence gave Newcastle an attacking platform they should not have had. Once Pep had chewed them out at halftime the second half was much better and we were largely in control.

In the first half in particular we allowed ourselves to be drawn into a physical battle with Newcastle, our team isn't built for that. It is built to strangle the life out of the opposition by controlling the ball.

We know pep or you should know him by now! Early season he switches the back line to get the players match fit after the game he said even Haaland won’t play 3 games a week it’s about managing a squad what he has been doing since he has come here!!
