There's no winning on here though.
Doesn't make enough changes when he's got 5 subs.
Makes too many changes and we nearly fuck up.
We were winning 3-0 and comfortable. We have 3 big games coming up, it made sense to make changes - I doubt Pep expected the performances that came from some of our squad players though (won't call them out personally)
 
He had too many players that dont have the quality or character on that pitch for far too much of the second half.

However.....he saw an opportunity to protect and manage his elite,and took the gamble to use it.We did look shakey and we did ride our luck,but ultimately we are 3 points nearer that title and we are ready to finish the job on Wednesday.

That 45 mins will have been a huge learning curve for Pep,as well as a very stark reality check that his squad needs attention.
Its not right that he cant replace 4 or 5 players and not have us all shitting the bed at the huge drop in quality and the utter shambles of a performance that left us limping over the line.

I don’t have a problem with him making 5 subs, I actually think it’s a really wise move to keep the fringe players like Gomez, Phillips and Palmer involved late in the season, I think he just started too early and went a bit too hard.

Half time is obviously a point of inflection in any game, where their manager can make changes and give them a team talk to boost their morale and energy levels.

Leave Haaland + Stones on another 10 mins and they’d still get 40 minutes rest, but we’d have reestablished our control of the game and possibly been 4-0 up. At that point the game really is over and you could play literal kids.



Also I think because he made subs at 45, 53, 62 & 74 minutes he never let the game settle down and it became incredibly messy which Leicester realised gave them a chance.


He was right to do game management and save the legs of our most important players, but I just think the execution was off and if we weren’t playing the 19th team in the league who are resigned to relegation we could have dropped points and ended the title race there.

With Sheffield United coming up, and a few 3 game weeks I think he’ll have learned from it though.
 
Make 5 changes in 15 / 20 minutes, which he was right to do,and it will become disjointed irrespective of the players. So judging the players and their futures on yesterday is daft and something there is no chance Pep will do.
Maybe one or two of those subs aren’t good enough and Pep will know which ones, but it won’t be based on yesterdays game.

I thought we were still one light going into the season and that was before we lost Cancelo. It will be an incredible achievement if he manages to land one (both) of the big prizes when relying on so few players. I know that might sound conceited to someone reading from the outside, but he really is working miracles with the same players across three fronts, and the backroom staff are working wonders to keep them all in shape.

I still reckon he’ll need the full suit to get to the Champions League final and might yet need a joker, too. Found this interesting:

I knew on the Thursday before the game what Pep was going to do and had time to think about it calmly beofre the game and could see why he did it. I certainly didn't expect the performance we got, that was a bigger shock.

The match aside, it was a a good expereiince going to Porto and disappointing as it was to lose, I've endured far worse following City. You have to move on quickly; although I'll never forgive Ricky "effing" Villa.

Pep doesn't like the squad to be too big anyway: he really doesn't like leaving players out. Balancing the squad is not easy. If you have too many top players, you end up with unrest. If you have a bunch of really talented young players rounding out the squad, they may not get the minutes they need to develop.

I do think we need a bit more though when we cahse so many trophies. A couple of injuries to snior players and our bench looks light. We are a bit short of game changers on the bench.

I would sign Declan Rice rather than another CB and let Laporte go. Rice could do the CB stepping into midfield role and be the guy who gives Rodri a rest. You could also let Phillips go, so two big salaries out and one in. That would leave room for another forward to take Palmer's place (send him on loan). I'd like to see Bellingham replace Gundo (nothing against Gundo: I thought we missed him yesterday but...) and I would love Bernie to stay but I think he will need replacing too; maybe see how Doyle and McAtee do as players to round out the squad. I'd porbably look to loan Gomez out too and get a traditional left back into the squad.
