Pep Guardiola - 2024/25

Most people are unwilling/unable to acknowledge that every team Pep has ever had ‘should’ have won what he has, because they’ve generally been the best players in the leagues he’s won, while in ours and Bayern’s case he’s underachieved in Europe.

Now he’s got more mediocre players to work with, he’s going to finish in a mediocre position in the league. His entire career to this point has been impossible to properly judge, because managerial greatness is defined by overachievement, and he’s never had the capacity to do that with the default level of talent he’s always had.

What I will say is, now that our recruitment and overall quality is diminishing, it’s time to get a proven overachiever in to manage the club, because that’s what it’s going to take to keep us competitive over the next few years.
The Barcelona side he took over had just finished 18 points behind Real Madrid. City had just limped in 4th, 15 points behind LEICESTER

The idea these were already the best teams in their respective leagues is laughable

The Bayern Munich manager should always win the league, based on resource imbalances. Which he did, every season he was there

The type of nonsense I'd expect to see on a rival forum who never watches City and wants to talk our achievements down. I understand why a Scouser might say this sort of shite about the most successful football manager of this or any other era, but someone professing to being a blue? Beyond me.

The damage was done last summer when Pep, by his own admission, persuaded the club to go one more year with the old guard and postpone a rebuild.
A full time CEO would have spotted the flaw in this position, ie Pep would select them irrespective, and put a stop to it.
However we do not have a CEO now, we have a part time exec from CFG. Soriano spends much more time on that than on City.
We used to say we were the best run club in the Prem, but that is no longer true, CFG takes precedence. See ticket prices.
The honeymoon is over.

The question I ask myself is.. if Pep became available to become City manager this summer, after achieving what he achieved over the last 8 years with another Premier league club, would I want him?
The answer is absofuckinglutely!!

This summer will see the clear out that is needed. Afterwards, we will see how he goes.
Currently, he's got some hard work to do. Let's see how the season ends and who is coming in over the summer.

I don’t even know where to start with this post other than state that I pretty much disagree with everything you’ve said.

For a start, do other sides in the PL or Europe not have top squads with the same ambitions as City?

The hardest thing to accomplish in football is sustained success at the top. There can only be one champion and Pep has been dominant in his time here.

The idea that Pep should have achieved 100 points, a domestic treble, Four-in-a-row, a proper treble as well as 6 PL titles in 8 years just shows why he is the best.

No other manager is held to the same level of scrutiny as him.
Also the idea that he's underperformed in Europe? Compared to fucking who? Not Alex Ferguson, not Bob Paisley, not Arrigo Sacchi, not Johan Cruyff, not Brian Clough. We are talking about the greatest managers of all time here who had more years than Pep to do the business, and Pep has the same or more than the lot of them. Like you say, no other manager is held to these standards.

I suppose you could say Zidane and Ancelotti but the fact that Real Madrid can outspend everyone in Europe and their own country dents the argument that Pep "should" have won his leagues.

Yep, I've been reading a lot of bullshit this season. The latest is that the era of 'system managers' is over. These are big words for a competition that has seen its first season in five (and only second in eight) not being won by Pep.

Yep it’s amazing how much crap some people can make up.

Fucking hell we've had one eye off the ball.and misjudgment since Pep got here. The lesson will have been.learned.

I think Pep hasn't had the best season, but neither have the players who have played. Some of these have won us countless trophies. We were feared across Europe as we had players in peak form but also became world class from Pep's coaching, they had the intelligence to take on what he was proposing. We have always been vulnerable to counter attacks since Pep has been here and before, but teams were afraid. Thats gone. Pep always said his team will be up there if they can take on his ideas and believe in them. I'm not sure all the players get it.

We lack leaders on the pitch who can drive the team and score a few. We have relied on Erling to score goals. The rest are abit meh!!

Watched the PSG team under Enrique, this guy is/was a Pep clone. He has evolved and his team play some bloody good exciting football. Pep needs his mojo and a rethink on how to evolve again.

I'd give him another year.

I’m wondering if this poster posted an is pep the best in the world thread when he delivered us the treble?

Or are such threads solely reserved for when pep isn’t doing that?

Unbelievable.

i've said it before,
i'll say it now
and i'll likely say it again...

rodri,
rodri
and rodri...

had he been fit things would've been much different this season.
last season when he didn't play we lost games.
his absence is the reason we're not at our best.

and that point will be proved when he returns.

Realistic how many players signed for City because of Pep and his empire.
We have been champions with Mancini and Pellegrini, But We are Now A Super Club because of Pep.

You also have to be gracious in defeat because you can not keep winning the title every year, Something had to give after 4 in a row and the treble season, We will only know in the next 3 to 5 years if Pep's empire was over this season,
Pep can still have another amazing run of titles at City, but I don't see the same success of the last 10 years.

Pep changed football and the Premier League and it took the rest 10 years to catch up, So City and Pep will do well if we win the title again and retain it in the next 3 years

I understand your point and don’t disagree but I think the situation has been exacerbated by the horrendous number of injuries suffered during this campaign. I’m confident the club and Pep will put this right and a good start has been made with the acquisition of players particularly Khusanov and Marmoush. I expect more changes in the summer

Savinho 8 assists so far
Phil 2

Savinho doesn’t play vs rags.

That’s first and the biggest problem Pep has. He is not challenged to play the basics. Play the winning team. He can get 10 more world class players next season. The frequency of his brain farts will define our season/success

yeah, i agree.
the incredible amount of other injuries compounded rodri's,
without a doubt.

and yet, still,
here we are,
with a good chance of top 5 and a shot at the f.a. cup,
all because guardiola is sticking to the principles he is regularly called out for on this forum.

a quote of his from a while back...

"if you wake up every morning and you are going to do something you love, that is enough.
no. no. not going to change."

and if my understanding is correct,
we can buy more players before the club world cup,
to add to the return of rodri,
and we might even win that, who knows.

hardly a shit season.

alternatively, we could go a season without winning anything.
the end of the fucking world to some it seems.

the guardiola naysayers can bang on all they like.
the fact of the matter is he will be our manager for a long time yet.
and i, for one, am glad of it.

Personally I don't think it's valid to say that the manager whose team got 91 points last season and is still the current PL holder is past his best. It definitely stinks of something, and if it isn't entitlement then it is a severe lack of perspective. Especially if you're also saying the players are past their best.
Bully for you. It’s just as valid a view as yours, albeit expressed in a less Trumpish fashion. Both opinions are held by a good number of people.

Injuries to key players, an ageing squad and fatigue are all valid reasons on why we have significantly dropped off this season. Pep is also accountable and he has made mistakes and his loyalty to some players has to be questioned. I do think his split from his wife has perhaps impacted on his focus and concentration.

As we all know Pep is a serial winner and I don't think he will want to leave City on the back of winning an FA Cup and securing a top 5 place (he says hopefully). He will want another League title imo and with the funds in place I still think he is best person to lead City next season.
