Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

Can he still keep up the motivation for himself and and players, can he create the same hunger within squad?
He did mention cycles before, also players and manager get tired of each other etc. Can he still get the best out of the squad...
Last season we had many losses and I did not have the feeling the players hate to lose. f they did they would not start playing only around 60th minute mark once we are behind and the house is burning.

Maybe 2 titles in a row made them a bit more content with what they achieved while Liverpool became very hungry for success after they lost out on 1 points to us. Those many late winners, coming back, turning around last 10 minutes, even against Leeds now they were putting men in the box, at 3-3 you could see they are going to find a goal.
Not playing particularly well but still getting the 3 points regularly. Sign of champions really.
On the contrary we lost games last season when playing well, dominate, having 20 shots and allowed only 2 shots for opponent and they got a win out of that.

The hunger and the tactical discipline off the ball in terms of proper pressing, workrate, trackback , positioning of defenders etc.
These two needs to be on top level this season if we want success and bounce back from last season.

To be honest once players get the feeling this is a farewell season to Pep I can see this going very bad way because they dont need to impress a manager who wont be here long anyway. Especially the players who will not be first choice players.

Soriano and Txiki would not let this contract situation to happen this way if it is not for Pep their big friend.
They would have pushed for a renewal or a change this summer. To let Pep think about it maybe until February, and then make a decision what we tell to potential new managers, we want you but maybe not, lets wait a few months?
The later Pep decides the less time we have to bring in/agree with the new one.

For Messi, I have same feeling he wanted Pep not City. If Pep would go to New York City maybe Messi would like to join them next summer not us.

I feel like the players want the big one now, the UCL! The hunger to win the league isn't there any more.

I did acknowledge that, he finds it tedious, certainly the inane questions, but he didn't give off the vibe of someone who was buzzing for the start of the new season, spending most of it, telling us all we have players who can fill in elsewhere.
There lays the problem. Trying to fill round holes with square pegs. It does not work long term as we saw last season. The other thing is that Peps' seemingly lack of enthusiasm will transcend to the players and fans alike. Let's hope he was merely being cute with the Journos!!

Unless Messi arrives in the next few months, I don't see Pep extending.

It will take something of that magnitude to seemingly fill him with renewed zest for the job?

Listening to Pep there, while acknowledging how much he finds the whole presser thing annoying, he provided little optimism and enthusiasm for the season ahead.

He actually sounded a bit like Mancini in his final days, dissatisfied with his lot.

We seem to be sleepwalking a little into the unknown this season.

First time in a while that there is less confidence and certainty about how the team will actually perform?
This. Yes we've bought Torres but in reality that's a swap for Sane. Is it an improvement? Time will tell. Yes we've bought Ake but not sure if he truly is better than what we have. We're still proper centre-half short again and we're still exposed in the striker stakes. Aguero never does a season these days and who is to say he won't be injured again after he comes back. We only have Jesus and he can't carry us a full year. Not impressed with Citys transfer window so far and I doubt Pep is either. We need to do better if we truly harbour any hopes of convincing him to stay.

I dont like the situation of a manager going into the last season along with players like Kun and the future still up in the air.

If he wants to extend then say so and get it done so that the focus is on football each week and not questions on his future. Rumours he is months away from making a decision is fine, that's his prerogative but it shouldn't be fine for the club and if its based on Messi possibly rocking up then i will be annoyed as no club should be hanging around and making major decisions on what if's.
The fact we have heard nothing suggests strongly Pep is not renewing. If he confirms he is going it will be non-stop speculation all season about the new manager. If Pep says nothing we also have uncertainity. We can't win either way. I think our succession plan was blown when Arteta left. If he was still with us there could be a smooth transition.
The club faces a tricky moment but we have faced bigger challenges in the past. All bets are off for everyone during this crazy Covid season in any event. At least we are not going bust (like the Glazers)

The Lyon selection, performance and result did us enormous harm in my opinion.

Time will tell, starting on Monday.

Agree 100 per cent. The Lyon match felt like a defining moment for the players. Kev's interview afterwards where he used the phrase "it was the same old stuff" spoke volumes. It was a moment where some of Pep's magic faded a bit. Confidence is everything in football. I think Moday's game is critical for our coming season.

Personally think Lyon was the night the dressing room was lost, I sincerely hope I am very wrong, Monday will give an indication.

"Same old stuff", could probably use that comment to throw jabs at Sterling and Jesus once again missing chances or the defence failing to do the basics.

Monday wont be any sort of indication at all, preparation has been fucked since the whole lockdown period.

Really feel like this shortened pre-season could work against Pep and the team. Feels like a continuation of last season, without the chance for us to take stock and work on some of the issues we had to get back to our best.

We haven't addressed the problem in the midfield with lack of mobility and the ease with which teams would run through our middle, so I don't see much changing in that aspect of our game.

At this stage, unless Pep can get to the final of the CL I think that a fresh change may be good for us, so long as we pick wisely.

I am sick of hearing about players signing just for Pep, they sign for Manchester City FC.

And if they are signing for a manager and not the club it's not healthy.

The manager is one of the great coaches and understandable that players want to work with him but the club should be the biggest attraction.

Every elite club in Europe can offer pretty much the same things to a player, some will pick the biggest pay cheque, others may pick the most desirable place to live and some will pick based on the manager and the style of football. Peps the biggest asset we’ve got in terms of standing out from the rest, I’ve no issue with players stating that was the thing that made them choose us.

Most clubs have had a disrupted pre-season. I think Monday is important for us because we have to get the Lyon result out of our system. It's an important game against a tough opponent. Even the best players can be affected by confidence issues. I hope we can come out of the blocks fast.

Pep's the best manager in the world but he works best in 3-4 year stints, too much fatigue from everyone involved to always keep going again with same mental readyness.

Like with players, we have to learn to say goodbye in the right moment. Let's go one final time and start fresh next year with a new man. I don't think anyone wins by doing 1 year extensions.

Interesting comments from Thiago about Pep

'They had a good professional relationship but as with many players under Pep's management, the experience together was too intense. 'Very, very few go running back to him,'

Not the first time we have heard it.

I think if he was going to extend he would have done it by now.Nothing to be gained by leaking his intentions and the players no longer responding on the Field

Hope i am wrong.

I am sure the Club has all angles covered what ever the future holds.

My biggest fear,is the "is he,isn't he Circus" will follow us in to every game and undermine the Season.

First defeat will be the MSM Starting shot

We lose ground then by Christmas i expect the Rag MSM will be going nuclear.
