I'm going to preface this by saying that I know I'm going to come off as an entitled twat...
...but for most of my adult life, City have been a really good team. I didn't live through the many "typical City" or "same old city" moments.
Still, I feel like we need to evaluate Pep's performance. This season, for me, was no better than Pellegrini's final year albeit with a much better squad.
Repeated failures in the CL, the makeshift defense, etc need to be put under a microscope more. I understand that this is the best few years in City's history.
While Pep is arguably the greatest manager of our generation, some times a new face, a new voice can make the difference. I am unsure whether I want Pep to sign an extension or not. I do not know who would come in to take us to the next level or fix our multiple issues with defense and/or defensive system.
I love what Pep has done, I truly do but one thing that always irked me was when he would, during CL, talk about how "we're not ready", we're "teenagers" in the competition, we don't have the history of the "elite" cartel teams. It may be true but constantly harping on it doesn't really do anything. That doesn't give off confidence. If anything, Pep's tactics during CL knockout stages have shown insecurity and fear. Against Liverpool, first leg, our setup was based off fear and caution. Same thing against Tottenham, first leg and against Lyon. He famously said "we need to learn to play football with courage". He needs to show that in his setup and lineup selection.
FurthermoreI couldn't care less about history. We're City, we don't live in the past. We make our own history.
If we are set up with the right tactics and playing our game, how we play, we can go toe to toe against anyone. I truly believe that.
Anyone with a brain could've seen that playing a midfield with Ferna, Rodri and Gundogan would be suicide. There is literally no energy in that midfield. Also, I understand it's not just Pep and there were numerous individual errors but the blame lies at the helm. I don't think the setup was the right call to put the players in the best position to win.
I have more, jumbled thoughts about this and everything else but I don't even know how to type it out. I'm sure it's just emotions and I'm upset at the loss but whatever.
I'll still 100% support Pep, any player that wears our shirt and the club but as fans we have the right to feel emotional and critical of the club we love when expectations aren't met.
