Perhaps the most interesting press conference Pep has given since he's been here.
I will not tell a lie. I've never quite warmed to Pep in the way that I warmed to Roberto or — going much farther back — Joe Mercer. But I have unbounded respect and admiration for the man, and it's growing ever stronger. But stepping back a bit, what I see is this. It is not just success and trophies that bond. Difficulties and crises also can be just as conducive to bonding. This is what I think is happening with Pep, and it's a growing tendency. We know that Barcelona is the club of his heart, and that's normal, but I think his evident desire to defend this club from the irrational hatred and jealousy that it's subject to, and which has emerged so repulsively in the last 36 hours or so, and the dignity which he displays in that defence, particularly in this press conference, shows that he now genuinely loves this club and city.
I should add that I don't feel that his command of the English language holds him back here. Not at all. He says exactly what needs to said, firmly and, as I say, with great dignity. Every point he makes is simply irrefutable.
