Pete The Badge Q&A

i once saw him with his rather chunky radio outside Portman Road one Saturday afternoon in 88/89 after the game. It wasn’t a pocket radio that you used to see fans holding on the last day of the season but the sort you’d have in your kitchen. As he had his radio, I asked him if he knew the scores from elsewhere. Rather brilliantly, he then rewound the tape and played the results.

I often wondered if he did that to provide a service to fellow blues or so he could memorise the results on the way home.

* youngsters - ask your parents about Saturday afternoon games, transistor radios and tapes.

The joy to be had when your C90 tape unravelled, and you had to use a pencil to rewind it back into it's casing. Bliss!

I first met Pete in the eighties when i lived in Kent and we used to do the group travel from London with the supporters club. He said he'd never had any bother anywhere, even Millwall and he dressed like that back then. For night games he often stays in a B+B in Blackpool as its cheaper than Manchester. How's that for dedication?

What years were they? I was in the London supporters club in 87/88 and used to travel with them. Remember a woman named Tina running it. Some good lads on them trips. I remember going to Everton with the London lot for the league cup QF loss and the Plymouth 3-2 loss when 2-0 up at HT! There were others but I can’t remember too many of them as was probably a bit tipsy!

It would have been around that time as Tina sorted me out a ticket for the Bradford away promotion game. Frank Newton of the bananas craze got it me, it was in the Bradford stand that got rebuilt after the fire and he even got me the Bradford membership card with it.
