Peter Drury replaces Martin Tyler on Sky Sports

I won't miss him but his commentary style changed dramatically after he joined Sky, for evidence listen to his comms on the Huddersfield and Bradford matches. Basically he sold his soul to the Sky mantra of "red-shirts good, anyone else bad for subscription levels".
Said this a few times over the years.
A brilliant commentator in his early Granada years, one of the best around, imo
He changed when contracted to sky...
I still think it's interesting that liverpool fans thinks he he hates them.
Overall,a great career, he brought the game to life,to me ,in the 80s and I can't forget that, despite the apparent bitterness later on.
I wish him a good retirement.

+1 for Barry Davies. A great commentator whereas Motson became a caricature of himself over the years. All the boring, crappy stats he used to roll out were irrelevant as far as I was concerned.

I was also a great fan of David Coleman's football commentaries back in the day. His "One-Nil" deliveries were all that were needed when the deadlock was broken.
Coleman and Davies are the best I've ever heard.but I constantly get them confused.
One of them commentated on the Everton 2 City 2 81 FA cup quarter final at Goodison, prob the most exciting City game ,in my life....,that I wasn't present at,...watching it even now on YT still sends shivers down by back..was so proud of City that day,and that pride swelled further when in later years I spoke to Blues who went to the match and the trouble they had ..all day
The commentator states
"Its bedlam on and off the pitch, all around the ground"
Didn't seem to bother Gerry Gow.a hero of mine at the time.

Think Coleman did the City 5 Notts county 1 match for Sportsnight
I was allowed to stay up late to watch it,Dennnis Tueart scored 4,but it was unsung home grown blue Dave Bennet who broke the deadlock
Funny how certain matches stay in your mind,Tony Coleman made the league cup 4th round in 80/81 seem like the World Cup final.....I've Just mentioned two scintillating matches there that are in my memory bank for ever...it's a pity the Granada documentary " City" from 1980/81 couldn't find time or space for either match ...didn't fit the doom and gloom approach they had set out for us when the camera was rolling.
I digress.

A vote for Gerald Sinstead.

Tyler always annoyed me. Seemed to have a huge list of factoids he had to fit in irrespective of their pertinence at the time and just wouldn’t shut up inanely dribbling on and on, so would miss interesting play he should be drawing viewer’s attention to, so I spent most of time shouting at the screen; ‘what about that 40yrs pass by walker’ or ‘astonishing control by Mahrez’ etc.

But his worst offence was constantly sucking up to Neville - any match or circumstance would be brought back to Utd being better. Ended up with entire matches reminiscing about ‘92 - and no halftime relief as Rio (or any other ex Utd player they could find) then took over.
im glad he’s gone.

Always remember the chant from the kippax after Sinstadt had been caught in the porn cinema.

“Gerald Sinstadt is a w@nker, is a w@nker!”

I think it was also live on the big match, can’t remember who the game was against.

Ha ha - id forgotten that - so an extra point for him then!
maybe listening to dirty talk (highlighting Swedish birds in the crowd etc) especially now Sheffield Utd and Luton are back to bore us all - is the way forward for commentators. Sorry I spelt his name wrong too.

Factoids? Please don’t use that language on here, that belongs to the irritating Cockney **** and his sycophants on Radio 1 and 2 in thankfully the past.
