Petrol prices

This argument "why do people bother with cars" is normally made by people who live in cities.

I live in a small village, bus one an hour, train station ( next village not the main station )around hour and a half walk along dangerous unlit lanes.

Getting to work by public transport is a non starter. I could cycle and get to work all hot and sweaty. Would mean leaving home earlier and getting home later.

As for going to watch City for get it theres no way I could get to Manchester and back in one day.

If I could get back to ramsgate they would be no buses to the village. It would be about 7 mile walk along unlit lanes.

For some people a car is a necessity for some it isn't

Below are the historic data of oil prices for the last 5 years.

These figures are accurate and can be checked against market trends.
This clashes sharply with the price at the pumps

When early in 2022 with the fuel shortage caused by panic buying, the Tories allegedly removed it from the monopolies list. Allowing the gasoline producers to set their own price.
With this government you get what its says on the tin.
Pretty sure the high cost is down to refining capacity. @metalblue a month or so back mentioned it here...

That screenshot says VOLume on the y axis not $ per barrel. The one I just checked (https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price) suggests 158% increase over 5 years.

There were higher prices per barrel between 2008 and 2016 though.

I read somewhere that 56mph isn’t the optimum for fuel efficiency as every car is different. They suggested more realistically it’s between 45-49mph. My m340d averages over 40mph irrespective of how I drive. If I’m particularly careful I can get 50mph+. I changed to it from a SUV in March when I saw what was coming.
Maybe somewhere nestling between the 55mph to 60mph for ours. I was advised to make good use of the cruise control feature at given speeds to maximise mpg which is a lot easier with adaptive cruise control as you can kick back and let the fly by wire do all the work.

Petrol Prices.com is a handy tool to see the keenest local prices in your area and is updated daily. A shame Tesco are not still offering 10p off the litre with a £60 shop.

I've practised drafting for years, particularly of lorries.

I try to refrain from using brakes too. I often see drivers accelerating toward traffic lights on red, or towards the car in front and then slamming on the brakes to slow down or stop. It looks ridiculous and must waste loads of fuel.

As a cyclist you really appreciate how much energy is saved by drafting or coasting towards traffic lights. I certainly don't pedal furiously and then slam on the brakes to stop....its preferable to free wheel to slow down.

The best fuel saving tip though is dont drive. Walk or cycle instead.
I think your right regarding driver anticipation and awarenes, as it makes little sense unnecessarily braking and losing the energy you create.

I went to Sale tonight on an errand and the amount of motorists on the ringroad slipstreaming, draughting and minimising overall speed brought home the seriousness of the situation. Circa £1.90 a litre and it could easily pass the £2 mark by the end of summer @£9 the gallon.

The prices are a disgrace and we are being well and truly shafted mate. I keep hearing all these excuses why it’s so high. The only thing I believe is that we are knocking on the door of the top ten world wide for petrol prices per litre.

Unsure of the figure banded but probably around 50% a litre going on tax and vat.

If I was a cynic I might be thinking that where we are at the minute with the price of everything, it is a way for Govt's & Global Corporations to get all the money back (and more) that they lost during the pandemic.

Good job I'm not a cynic ;)

I don’t know the exact figure but I do know it’s applied as a % so every time the base rises they colllect more tax. that could be fixed easily.
Boris needs to do something about the fuel levy and do something pretty damn quick as the economys running on empty, as we aimlessly spiral toward recession. Cant he substitute the loss of tax from elsewhere?
