Petrol prices

I’ve no idea why people bother with cars full stop. Biggest waste of money in our lives. Even before these fuel price hikes, owning and running a car is like standing at your bedroom window continually throwing £50 notes out to the world.

Unless you have a disability and you’re unable to get about using your feet, a bike or public transport, you don’t need a car.
Alas without mine I couldn't earn any money, I know its a bit shit but I wouldn't have any £50 notes to throw out of the window in first place. :-(

I agree with you if you live in a city or big town, for some us who choose to live a little out of the way (Norfolk/ Cambridshire border) a car is essential..
The nearest station is 5 miles, however there is a bus stop just over 2 miles away, you have to arrange it with the local operator to request the bus to stop tho. :).

3 hours to work walking and public transport, 30 mins by car. Pubic transport is very expensive compared to a car, especially for 3 or 4 people. £60 on the train for a 35 mile journey or £12 in petrol return.

And if you live out in the sticks, miles from the nearest town, with no public transport?

One of our Vauxhall combo's blew up after constantly using that crap Morrisons diesel who do we sue. It had only done 168 thousand miles an all wish we'd used that good BP stuff now might still be running :-)
No criticism but do you keep the vehicles you operate well serviced? Changing the filters regularly is essential for high mileage vehicles. I’ve got a couple of vans, the Nissan NV200 has done over 250k miles on Supermarket fuel, I’d have normally replaced by now but retirement beckons and I can’t see the point of replacing it.

Tank of fuel has gone from £91 in the van I drive to yesterday £107 in the space of less than three weeks. Use about 15 tanks per month for the 2 vans, prices based on £1.40 per litre so at 55p pl extra it’s around £5.5k per annum extra.

Tyres were £140 per set last year (very small) now £252, discs and pads fitted £170 now £290, glad I’m getting out.

Fine if you live in town, and they aren’t on strike….

That is an excellent return. What's the engine?
I read somewhere that 56mph isn’t the optimum for fuel efficiency as every car is different. They suggested more realistically it’s between 45-49mph. My m340d averages over 40mph irrespective of how I drive. If I’m particularly careful I can get 50mph+. I changed to it from a SUV in March when I saw what was coming.

We managed 56 mpg on a recent run by maintaining speed at 56mph and slipstreaming the Artics. I understand the closer you get the less the drag but we erred for safety by maintaining a reasonable distance. We also threw out unessasary gubbidge and kept feet off the accelerator on downhill sectors to neutrilize the auntie. Have other bored members taken to utitilising hypermiling techniques .. or do you just crack on regardless?
I've practised drafting for years, particularly of lorries.

I try to refrain from using brakes too. I often see drivers accelerating toward traffic lights on red, or towards the car in front and then slamming on the brakes to slow down or stop. It looks ridiculous and must waste loads of fuel.

As a cyclist you really appreciate how much energy is saved by drafting or coasting towards traffic lights. I certainly don't pedal furiously and then slam on the brakes to stop....its preferable to free wheel to slow down.

The best fuel saving tip though is dont drive. Walk or cycle instead.
