Phil will always be the man who wrecked genesis, turning them into a pop group, after getting rid of Peter Gabriel, when Peter was with them they were pretty awesome.
A bit harsh, nimrod.
They were always a songwriting collective, and from Genesis (83 album) all songs were credited as Banks/Collins/Rutherford.
BUT, and it's a big but, every Genesis fan worth his salt, knows that Genesis is Tony Banks' band. Always has been. Always will be.
Collins himself alludes to this, in the 1991 documentary "No Admittance", where he says "I'm still playing third in line, in this band".
Yes, they did go TOO poppy, but times change. They'd properly broken America by 1980, and they're not mad keen on the prog stuff, so the three of them "adapted" their sound. Not for the better, but hey-ho.
Gabriel wasn't "got rid of". I just think he got pissed off with Banks' controlling the band, so he jumped ship. Very, very sad. That period of Foxtrot/SEBTP/TLLDOB is unsurpassed, for me.
Getting back to Collins, I can understand the resentment. Ubiquitous from 1980 (the brilliant Duke) , to pretty much the mid 90's
(the average Both Sides), he was everywhere, and people got pissed off. BUT, there were many moments of quality.
In The Air Tonight, in fact, most of Face Value.
The West Side/ Do You Know, Do You Care/I Don't Care Anymore
Some great drum fills on "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
The catchiness of No Jacket Required
The Drum Duet with Chester Thompson on the Invisible Touch tour, is a thing of genius.
Add to this, a couple of collaborations. Frida's "There's Something Going On", and "The quiet's too loud" with Lamont Dozier.
The Yanks LOVE him, whether black or white. But us British have a problem with those who get too successful.
Yes, he's an annoying fucker. But (at times) he's an awesome annoying fucker.
