Phil Dowd

Another episode of the Phil Dowd show!

Can you believe that, outside the box gives him 2 more chances to score then gives a penalty and red card, he loves the attention

Not the worst decision ever but yet again a really important game is decided by the referee.

Not sure what your problem is. From the PL rule book;

Therefore, Dowd got both parts of the decision 100% correct. Definite penalty and a definite red card.

Having read the other thread it is not only definite red BUT a penalty as well. I admire the way he let play go on that long and then still brought play back.

In your opinion. Mine is the first pull is a yard outside the box. But I personally think more of those should
be given as a penalty anyway. Teach defenders to defend and not cheat.

It's a bollocks law though isn't it? If the pull starts inside the box, and carries on outside, do you give a free kick instead??!

You may well have a point. However, bollocks or not, it IS the law. Therefore, going by that, Dowd got it spot on.

I can understand the law, but does advantage mean scoring a goal? Dowd allowed play to go on for 4 seconds after it, and I just don't understand when advantage ends.

This. Play continued too long for it to be called back. So if they dont score you go a man down and conceed a penalty. May as well let them score. Opens a huge can if worms for me as refs are too inconsistant as it is, now they can call play back when they choose if the other team dont score. Overall looks another shocking performance from him in general

Penalty but not a red for me.

As Jim as quoted above the law clearly states that if the holding starts outside the box and continues inside the box that a penalty should be given.

In terms of the advantage, for me he hasn't gained an advantage by Dowd playing on because the chance he ends up with is more difficult than a penalty kick, therefore he's been disadvantaged by the ref not blowing his whistle and so Dowd was right to bring it back.

I don't think it was a red card because the red is given for "denying a goal scoring opportunity". Wickham clearly had a goal scoring opportunity, hence Cala hadn't denied him one. What he had done was deny him a better goal scoring opportunity, but that's not how the law is written. So there was no denial of a goal scoring opportunity, so no red card.

So if Cardiff would have just let Sunderland score would that have meant that their player would not have been sent off?
