Phil Foden - 2017/18 performances

I'm wrong in your opinion.! Lol.

Let me spell this out to you again. I don't think Yaya is good enough for a place on our bench these days. I think Foden deserves a place on that bench. I fully recognise that they play different roles. But Yaya isn't pulling his considerable weight these days, he isnt offering any cover as far as I can see as Ferns is starting every game. Yaya only comes on occasionally at the end when games are well and truly safe. In case you hadn't noticed he hardly ever intercepts play these days and cant keep up with play. That bench place deserves to go to Foden. Essentialy in a nutshell you would clearly prefer to have someone on the bench who offers very little, can't effect a game and has no future at City. Based I assume on the fact that he has been a great servant for our club. I prefer to look to the future.!

Owen, Rooney, Walcott, Wilshire and Lennon all had their debuts in the premier league at 17 or younger. I guess you either just don't rate Foden as highly as those players or think that their early debut hindered their progress and was wrong? Can't have it both ways based on your age argument.

I've repeatedly said Foden will get a chance and so he should.
But at this point in time and at this point of the conversation I'll probably sure on the side of Pep with what he believes is a more balanced bench.

I personally don't think no cover for Fernandinho and 3 near identical players on the bench to cover to unstoppable players is a good balance.
It seems Pep agrees too.

As for his age & physique, interesting list of players you've named there, all burnt out in the mid to late 20's. Perhaps they were all exposed far too young?
Perhaps all but Wiltshire were exceptional in the physical attributes? Something I mentioned earlier.

Phil Foden is a very exciting prospect indeed. He will get game time but it would be a disaster to rush his development. He needs minutes in the first team here and there, and to train with the first team. As he becomes comfortable at that level, he will earn himself more minutes and appearances until he is a fully active member of the first team, a regular, by the age of 20.

He has the capability of being at a similar level to David Silva, and that would make him one of the greatest English players of all time. You polish a diamond with care and skill, you do not rush the job.

I always give new players (especially new players to the league) a season to get into the swing of things. I have huge faith in Bernardo given his performances for Monaco against us last season. I don't get to many games but saw the 5-3 and he was the best player on the pitch.

We need someone on the bench (or rotating the first team) to cover Fernandinho's position in case of injury. I don't think Foden is at all suited to the role, but I would sooner have Gundogan, Danilo or Delph (Danilo to LB) over Yaya in that position based on this season's performances. As Danilo and Gundogan normally make the bench, there's no need to have Yaya there as well IMO, making room for Foden.

I've agreed, I think YaYa is past it, but he still offers something totally different to every other player in the squad. That's my guess as to why he's on the bench.
I'd love to see Foden, and I've repeated said I believe we will.

He also hasn't been near the team because Pep wanted him to have World Cup experience with the England U17 team.

Let's not get carried away. There's a huge, HUGE difference between bossing a Youth World Cup and justifying a starting spot ahead of David, Kevin, Bernardo and Ilkay. And if Foden can't cut it yet- he's 17! There's no rush whatsoever. We just ease him in until he comes good. Maybe they were the exception rather than the rule, but the majority of preseason performances (especially in Girona) suggested to me that he needs time to get up to speed with top-flight football, and there's nothing wrong with that (granted he was very good against United).

I tend to agree, but I particularly want Foden to develop here. Now, I think he's more likely to stick around than others for obvious reasons, but if we don't give him opportunities and he sees players like Sancho getting regular first team minutes with a CL standard side over the next few seasons, he's going to question whether staying at City is best for his career.

If that means that we have to give him 5/10 minutes here and there as a 17 year old, why not? We're talking about the best U17 player in the world here...

He's different in that he doesn't fit the style we play whatsoever. Fernandinho's gusto allows us to build and retain an exhilarating tempo when we recycle the ball and Yaya's simply way too far off the pace to manage that. I think an injury to Fernandinho and having to replace him with Toure would damage us more than an injury to any other player we have.

I agree that we should, but the pace of his development shouldn't alter because of fan fear that he will go elsewhere. We have to do what is right for the player's development, and the club, above all other considerations.

Come on then schfc6 when you think he should get time on the bench?? I think this side of Christmas. You have said in 18mths time if I recall correctly?? . He will be 19 then. And I think by then would have left City for pastures new. And who would blame him. Pep isn't infallible. He made mistakes like playing Navas.

Need to be careful with these diamonds. Samaras lol
Only kidding btw. Foden is gonna be a superstar for sure.

I just wonder if with Komps injury issues that next season our CB quartet could be Stones, Ota, Fern & Tosin freeing up a midfield spot for Foden, maybe not as a regular but it would give him game time.
