I wouldn't put it beyond the media to do that.

It is routine for stories to be released at a time which that guarantees the biggest exposure and the maximum commercial opportunity. In the clickbait world a narrative which generates a huge audience of people who dislike MCFC (especially from a worldwide army of MUFC and LFC fans) is hugely valuable. Some of the obvious media trolls like Nick Harris and Delaney are making a living on the back of this negative narrative.

That's him,(oh no it's not...) he runs the @sportingincel website. He claims to be an expert in something or other but it turned out that no one believed him.
