The part about that shift in perception that most people on here conspicuously fail to appreciate is the effluxion of time.We were everyone’s ‘second club’ when we were in the doldrums. Famous for our loyal following and the fact we were in the shadow of the Rags, who everyone despised.
It was nice. But I’d still rather be successful and hated.
We were in the third tier of English football a quarter of a century ago. What does any supporter of another ’Big 6’ club under the age if 30 know or care about that? And why would they ever want or need to acknowledge the loyalty of our support back then? Ridiculous thing to expect.
And the same goes for much of our support too. They weren’t even born when we were dropping down the divisions. The last time we were relegated was over 20 years ago.
