not sure that's right given capital letters existed before lowercase.

early writing tended to use straight lines and sharp edges. if you're writing on stone, it’s pretty hard to carve clean curves.

think as parchment became more popular lowercase began to creep in, mostly due to the fact it was quicker. that was between around the 3rd to the 8th centuries.

it's thought romans mixed the cases purely for stylistic reasons and from what i can tell that's where we get it from.

capital letters cannot exist without lowercase.
a capital letter is a single uppercase instance at the beginning of a lowercase word.

i think you might mean uppercase existed before lowercase,
although, of course, it wasn't named that at the time.


edit:
i shall also repeat my claim that the "capslock" key is incorrectly named.
it should be called summat like the "uppslock" key.

i rest my (upper or lower) case :)
