Re: Fernando

I wish we wouldn't play a midfield two against a midfield three. It may be ok against a lesser team but the better teams will have a ball, no matter how good our individual players are.

A good opening day win and Dzeko and kompany looked excellent.

Re: Fernando

Made a few trademark interceptions, overall had a really good game.

In a few weeks when all the players are back to 100% match fitness, our midfield will be impenetrable. Fernando, Fernadinho and Yaya. Opponents will have to go wide to attack us, and there they will face the awesomeness of Mr Zabaleta and Mr Kolarov.

They way I see it, the only way to really damage us is with very pacey counter attacks, á la Livepool's style.

Isn't it always the same with Yaya? Takes 3, 4 or 5 games to reach his best every season but still produces the odd moment of magic like that ball to Dzeko today. He's a slow starter.

It was much the same at the start of last season except that he was banging in the free kicks which kept people off his back.

His role has changed completely since he first joined us. Now its all about knitting play, making himself available to receive the ball in the centre of the pitch. He cant do that and and at the same time play the box to box role that a lot of City fans expect from him. He's more like the "strolling" central midfield playmaker that most teams had 20-30 years ago. We signed Fernando partly because he will allow Yaya to play in that way.

Re: Fernando

Still early days to judge but that was a great performance from Fernando yesterday, big improvement on charity shield, thank god. He was busy and at it all afternoon, and loved the moment when he sprinted past Kompany to get the vital block on Perez shot. Not going to get carried away but very happy with that sort of commitment

Re: Fernando

Overall I thought he had an effective debut. You can already see the reasons why he was bought. Some of the tackling was exceptional and one in particular was game changing.

I also liked his simple distribution which was very NDJ like. The ability to retrieve possession and set up a counter attack is a key part of our game so I can see a bright future for the lad.

On the flip side he found himself ahead of the ball rather too often especially in the first half giving Newcastle the opportunity to run directly at us and it was apparent in the 2nd half that this had been highlighted to him as he didn't do it again.

Overall a positive debut and looks like someone that adds steel to the midfield which will allow Yaya and Fernandinho to be more influential offensively.

his debut is impressive. now we have destroyer which is comfortable with the ball too. his stature at times is like Kompany in the midfield. bring on Mangala & Zabaleta for the next game, now we'll have backline full of BEAST !

kept mixing them up due to poor quality of video on my laptop. only when they're both on screen at the same time you can notice that Vinny is much bigger and a bit lighter in the skin. otherwise, they look very much alike in their movement.
