I did this for ESPN today all about Fernando: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.espnfc.com/club/manchester-city/382/blog/post/2005485/fernando-will-be-one-of-the-least-spectacular-players-manchester-city-signed-this-summerbut-he-will-definitely-be-one-of-the-most-important" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.espnfc.com/club/manchester-c ... -important</a>

There was all-around general disbelief that the Blues had sold the Dutch midfielder in 2012, only to replace him two years later with a Brazilian who does the same job: Fernando.

Exactly. What a false argument then by a number of NDJ supporters here who slated us for stating NDJ's shortcomings viz his pace & athletic ability.
For example given a head start , NDJ lost in a foot race to allow Arteta to score @ Goodison Park

Now having seen a real holding midfielder in action i.e box to box runs (juxtaposed Fernando & NDJ in action) clearly we can see that NDJ would not even make the squad.

Anymore Doubters? Any apologies?

Re: Fernando

I'm delighted that he's doing well. I must admit I wasn't entirely optimistic on that happening, because he was never much of a player with the ball at his foot. I "predicted" him having the same sort of problem Javi García had, both being specialist DMs more suited to play alone in front of the CBs.

I guess Fernando's extra nimbleness and far superior ability to cover wide spaces with his speed will mark the difference and make a success out of him.

One thing you can be sure of: He'll always be a tremendous professional. During his 7 years with us, he was never the type to kiss the badge too much or make unfounded promises of eternal love to the club that "gave him a chance", like so many others do. He actually looked quite cynical and emotionally detached at times, possibly a bit annoyed at the fact that his colleagues kept jumping to better leagues, and him being one of the (relatively to his importance) worst paid athletes in our squad. Thing is, this never affected him on the pitch one bit. So many players have pouted and underperformed throughout the years with us, during the always difficult contract renewals, etc. Not Fernando. Not even when his relationship with the club hit the lowest point, midway through last season, we noticed the least change in his effort. Due to this, he maintained the support of the fans, even when going against the club's upper management, something I don't remember ever seeing at my club.

I wish him all the luck.

Re: Fernando

Fernando has started brilliantly I think.

He's absolutely rock solid and protects the back four so well. His reading of the game seems exceptional so far.

Reminds me a lot of Makelele.

Any update on his injury and if he will make the subs bench vs. Chelski?

(sorry mods, please merge with the Fernando thread if there is one)

Re: Fernando

Last Friday Pellegrini said Fernando would be out for 2 weeks, so not expecting him to play on Sunday. I guess we'll find out more at the press conference today...

Anyone know where he is with his groin injury, and whether he'll make it for the Hull game?

Him and Jovetic expected to be fit for Hull.

I believe it when I see it. I think he will be out 'til march-april.
