It's funny to read the first two pages of this thread. I still think that he will become a very good player for us.

But of course he's a limited player, a 'specialist', thus we don't really need him for the majority of our games. But 12m for him is not a bad business in any case, prices like that are being thrown away by literally every PL teams, oftentimes for much weaker players than Fernando.

We could have saved nearly £40 million by giving De Jong a new contract.

That's a bit over the top, isn't it? De Jong was already on significantly higher wages than Fernando is now (and wanted even more), and we splashed out 28m for Garcia+Fernando, but received about 15m for De Jong and Garcia combined. Of course, he is the best player of this lot, but even he wasn't a regular player for us when he left.

One could argue though, how did we miss on Matic so badly given the fact that we bought players from both Porto and Benfica.

Matic was on a buy back option.

this is often brought up and I do no think it really is an issue. Buy back doesnt mean we could not have bid an equal or greater amount - it would then be up to the player. Buy back is basically like right of first refusal at a set price

I really do think that we didnt want matic in the first place. if so then our scouting is shocking

Is anyone actually still defending Fernando?

Or can we all now agree that he really is dreadful

I am, sort of.

He's ended up in a new league in a team that's lost its way - "Jeez we're second for pete's sake". I THINK he's a downgrade on Garcia, but you just never know.

I'm willing to go as far as saying he is the worst player City have signed since Sheikh Mansour bought the club.

He provides the CB's with no cover whatsoever, we are always wide open when he plays, he only passes backwards or sideways like a crab, he can't tackle and when he kicked that ball out of play on Saturday we should have hauled him off and sent him straight back to Portugal.

Loan him to Melbourne, New York, I don't care but get rid and if I was James Milner and could see he was in front of me in the pecking order I'd be leaving too. It's an absolute disgrace.

I think it's clear that he struggles badly as part of a two man midfield. He cedes possession far too easily, and offers nothing going forward. It's strange, because his reputation in Portugal was very good, and a lot of respected journalists raved about him.

I'm not going to write him off completely though, as I still think he can do a job as a squad member. He can be utilised for away games when we play a three man midfield, especially in Europe, and also helping to close out games. Needs to improve quickly though.

he is a destroyer

You don't need a destroyer when you are playing against a 10 man defence. Against Chelsea he totally dominated Matic who has been their main man this season
