Player thread: Gael Clichy (2014/15)

Re: Gael Clichy

Any gifs of that touch in his own area and calmly passed it to Milner.

Incredible composure.

Re: Gael Clichy

He has somehow turned fron Wayne Bridge to Cafu overnight. Not sure how he has done it but I'm not complaining.

He was never Wayne bridge. He's been a top quality left back since he arrived at the club. He's always had a tendency to have the odd bad game, like all players. Early this season he had 2 or 3 bad games but his quality has seen his form return.

Interestingly the weakness in his game was always crossing. He's worked on it and he's not 'floating' then any more, he's clipping them in low and dangerous.

Agreed mate. And yea that touch and pass when under pressure was incredible. Clichy is so good with the ball when under pressure

He was disaster at the start of the season. Mistake after mistake, and to be honest, he could have cost us a goal against Southampton when he followed his man rather than stick with the defensive line. He costs us at least 4 goals this season by ignoring his man or letting the winger put in a cross easily.

I don't disagree mate: Like I said, he had 2 or 3 bad games early in the season but he's played his way back into the form he's showed most of his career.

Yeah he has done well. I thought his best years were behind him judging by his start to the season but I'm glad he has brought it back.

Re: Gael Clichy

The biggest change in his play that I've noticed is that he's been attacking the ball as soon as it comes to the winger in recent games. He's nipped in and stolen it a lot, or put so much pressure on the opponent that he's had to get rid of it right away (or Clichy got a tackle in). Previously (and most egregiously away at Ajax a couple of years ago) he'd sit 5-10 yards away from the winger, watch him receive the ball, control it, turn with it, and start running down the line. Even then he'd remain 5-yards away so that the winger could easily put in any cross/pass that he wanted.

His crossing still needs work (especially his ability/inclination to drive past the full-back and cross, like Kolarov does, instead of turning back and allowing them to regroup), but the defensive side of his game has been brilliant lately. Don't know if a coach has had a word, or if he was previously being told not to get too close, since that was one of Micah's problems as well, when his form started to slip.
