Virtually no chance Clichy gets another long term contract given his age, but he is doing a fantastic job stopping City from having to go out and buy one. his continued high level performances are allowing City the time to develop some homegrown talent and MAY save us $$$$$$ over the next couple of seasons.

However, he is susceptible to the ball inside him and the CB, but a good part of that is the CB's responsibility, too.

This for me. Had a great last few weeks. Seems to have beefed up to me a bit too and playing very aggressively which is something i haven't seen from him recently. Been one of the main reasons our current form is what is is.

Re: Gael Clichy

Clichy has always been a target for criticism he's often left isolated down that left hand side so it's difficult to defend well. Since he has had a run of games and some more support he has improved dramatically and going forward has managed to provide some decent crosses and passes plus a goal of course.

I don't think Zabaleta is much better defensively, he gets more support generally down that side and usually has Vinny to help cover as well. It's going forward and sheer passion for the club that make Zabaleta a hero.

I still think that compared to our right backs, with Sagna being quick and solid and Zabaleta being such a great ambassador for the club and excellent going forward, the left side could do with improvement. Kolarov was excellent last season though and based on Clichy's form and the fact he is home grown it's a tough choice on whether to stick or twist. Kolarov and Clichy combined offer a lot to the club and Pellegrini is all about the squad.

Well put mate.

I think you are right. I guess we would have to pay around £30m for a top class left back who would probably only be a slight improvement on what we have. Stick for me.

Its no coincidence that Clichy's form has improved massively because of a run of games and with the absence of Silva. Silva is a No 10 NOT a winger/wide midfielder. When he plays wide left Silva tends to drift inside leaving Clichy totally exposed and Clichy is still expected to fly forward to help with attacks and get back to defend with no cover which is why I believe some fan's opinions of his footballl abilities are skewed.

With Kolorov also being out and Nasri only recently returning, Clichy has had mainly Milner in front of him which has given him the protection he needs and the coinfidence that if he's forward and an attack breaks down, he's got the stamina and athleticism of Milner to count on rather than the fear that Silva will have drifted inside leaving us exposed to the swift counter-attack down our left. Fat Sam and other's figured this out which is why the left side of our defence with Mangala in his rookie season became a focal point for many of our opponents attacks.

Roma away proved that if we play our players in their best positions and use the best formation to suit the players we have, we are more than a match for anyone. This is the reason we have been baffled over the years as to why the likes of Dortmund and Athletico have progressed so far in Europe where we have struggled even though we have by far the better squad.

Our squad is very unbalanced as Roma away proved. We have FOUR excellent No 10 options in Silva, Yaya, Nasri and Jovetic and here in lies the problem. At our most effective we only require one of them and at best Yaya can drop back into midfield or Jovetic can play left of an attacking 3 which might allow us to accommodate 3 of them in a starting line up, but I think for both Yaya and Jovetic we have better suited players in those positions. 4 into 1 doesn't go and its a problem I don't envy Pellegrini having to sort out but its one I seriously think we need to.

I don't want rid of any of those players but this season Mourinho has proved that having specialist players for specialist positions is better than having many world class players and trying to shoe horn them into positions that doesn't best utilise their talents.

Re: Gael Clichy

Immense again today, 2 great assists. He was so good that Sunderland subbed both their right mid and their right back because neither could deal with him.

My Man of the Match, didn't put a foot wrong. He's been in great form the last month or so.

Spot on! well done Gael!!

Re: Gael Clichy

Deserves praise for his recent form I hope it continues.

Re: Gael Clichy

Another great performance!

Apart from a couple of dodgy games against, I think Newcastle and Moscow, he's been excellent overall since the Autumn.

Re: Gael Clichy

MOTM for me too,and its no coincidence Mangala plays with more confidence, and doesn't get dragged out of position as much, with him alongside.

Hopefully the boss will stop this rotation without extreme cause as kolarov is a waste of time,as he proved again in todays cameo

Re: Gael Clichy

Time to quit the rotation where LB is concerned in the league, at the very least.

Clichy has it nailed down.
