Up against the best player in the world, and made a good fist of it. One of the few players who was prepared to get tight all night, even during those 30 minutes before half-time. Thought he was excellent, and desperately unlucky with the red card.

We'll miss him in the second leg.

Excellent?

Not for me. Bar the challenge that led to us scoring, I thought he was given a lesson by Messi all night. Getting sent off just capped his poor night off.

Should've been on Messi's toes when he was waiting for the ball. Instead he let Messi receive it and all he could do then was chasing Messi's behind.
Red card harsh but both challenges were so clumsy it's unreal.
Finally I am not even going to discuss his crossing.

Clichy has been great lately but woofull last night. As were many others for that matter.

I'm with you on this, I thought he was the worst player on the pitch. Very surprised people are saying he did well. Obviously Messi is a quality player, but he ran Clichy absolutely ragged.

Exactly, you have to get Messi early or it's goodbye.

I thought the first yellow was soft, Rakitic was looking for the contact but the second was fair enough, a bit of a daft challenge when we needed more than anything to keep 11 on the pitch.

See everyone has figured out how to defend against one of the best players to ever grace the game. There is no left back in world football who is going to shackle him for a whole game, especially when he is in the form he is.

All about opinions, I suppose. I saw very little evidence to suggest that Messi ran him ragged - he may have gone past him a couple of times, but any influence he had on the game was when he came some way inside and had to be passed on. I thought Clichy did a much better job of getting tight to Messi than the other defenders did to their respective men, especially Kompany and Demichelis who were largely culpable in the first half for sitting far too deep and not getting anywhere near close enough to Suarez.

While excellent in the earlier post might have been an overstatement, I'd put his performance last night behind that of Aguero and Hart, and comfortably ahead of a handful of others (Fernando, Milner, Kompany, Demichelis, Nasri)

Agree, very good post.
