Player Thread: Patrick Roberts

He was beating Barca players for fun same as he does anyone else but he overdid it sometimes. He needs better quality players to work with though.

Its been the same in the Red Imps, Astana and Leicester games, he's beat 2 or 3 men but his teammates are so poor that he's pretty much had to go it alone. In the Astana game he must have beaten the left back at least 10 times and nobody was open. Celtics goal against Astana actually came from Roberts catching their defence out through defending, leaving the Celtic attackers nothing to do but wait for the pass. I'd be tempted to see how he worked out behind the striker, where if he beats a man he'll pretty much have a strike on goal, maybe its something they can try in a game against weaker league opposition. Either way Celtic need at least a couple more signings somewhere near Roberts' wavelength.

I think that if he makes it at City, it could well be as more of an inside player as you suggest, rather than a full time winger, as he lacks the raw pace for the wide position but is much more of a goal threat inside, than a Silva or Nasri for example. I also think he would then quickly learn to play the striker in if he was in that position (as he'd get a right bollocking when he didn't!).

"Patrick Roberts is a great player and he has a great future in the game" according to Luis Enrique

I didn't see the Celtic Barca friendly but heard he played very well. A pity he's not available to City now. He has a great future in the game

What a good time to be a City fan. We have a really great group of young players coming through. Not to be taken for granted, but future looks very promising.

From the parts I saw, he was very pleasing. I can't wait to have him back at the club. I'm personally very happy that Rodgers is at Celtic; despite his ego, he's OK with younger players. The experience up there will do him the world of good.

We're building quite the collection of young attacking talent - Roberts, Brahim, Sancho, Iheanacho, Sane (touch wood), Jesus (again, touch wood), and of course, Sterling.

Celtic fans I know rave about him, did question his size but apparently he has held his own physically and it can only be good for his future hopefully wi h us next season.

Thought I'd browse a Celtic forum -

He won`t be signing for us permanently, we`ve got a whole season to enjoy him and he`s had a good six months to integrate. He could very well be the difference between us making the group stages and not this season, he`s that type of influential player and is obviously desperate to play in the CL.

i would push the effin boat out for him. Considering the keich that we have signed /got on loan/ over theyears, he is by far, the best. If I had my way I would start with 'crowdfunding' we all chip in to buy the boy. He is beter than anything we have got, forrest included, opposing teams put 2 / 3 markers on him - he is that good.
the thought of losing him is just too much, i could not bear it.
Just get him signed Lawwell, don't piss about, we won't get anyone near his skill, we could build a team around him.
FFS......sign him!!!!!!!!

He's been fantastic.

I think he looks better than McGeady at the same age with the potential to be much, much better. Great attitude to go with his ability. Turned down going to under 19's European Championship to play in our CL qualifiers.

We should enjoy every minute he is with us because unless there is some massive change in Football he will not be with us beyond this season.

Totally agree Fergus far better than Aidan at his age - basically far better full stop !!

Watch videos of Messi, Robben or even his City teammate Silva and you'll see the same thing. They've no right foot. He goes down the outside and the only option is to cross it with a foot that is basically for standing on and nothing else. He comes inside and he has the option to lay a teammate off, play a through ball or get a shot away. I've no problem with him cutting inside. What should happen is a full back or midfielder should get outside him and overlap him which then gives the option to lay them off outside and get a cross in or it takes the double team away fro him and makes his cut in much more dangerous.

Folk the other day were moaning that we don't play him on the left where he can put crosses in for Dembele. I'm so glad that we don't do that. It would be such a Scottish thing to do. Have this wonderful dribbler who can beat men for fun and score a fair share of goals and stick him on the opposite wing and have him launching crosses all game.

He's not the finished article but games and experience will teach him when to go inside and when to outside, just like he needs to learn when to take a man on and when to pass.

What did impress me about his performance on Wednesday was that he tracked back more. In previous games he basically switched off when not on the attack but on Wednesday he got himself back more.

He is our best player by an absolute mile and we have no chance whatsoever of signing him permanently. I don't mean to be a downer - just being realistic. City were absolutely right paying 11m for him and they will receive that or more for him from some mid-low table epl team. I hope he can actually make the city starting 11. At the end of the day he has 10 times better end product than Navas.

He's probably our first player since mcgeady who has the confidence to consistently take on players and beat them.

A bit of a rarity now, but he's a player you genuinley look forward to watching. Can't wait to see him rip Astana a new one next week.

Even if we could afford to sign him and pay his wages , a complete no-goer of course , i suspect he wouldn't want to stay up here. 18 months in Scottish football is long enough for any decent player with ambition. If he'd came through our youth system he'd be looking to move South by next summer anyway.

Get the head down son , win the treble , and get on with your career with nothing but our best wishes and happy memories.

He could have worn a Barca shirt yesterday and wouldn't have looked out of place. Personally I can't think of a better manager for him than Rodgers. He worked magic with Sterling and Coutinho at Liverpool.

Head and shoulders above anyone else in scotland. Would be a disaster for us if he were to get injured

Cult hero in the making.

Have a feeling a few years down the line, we'll be saying "can't believe he played for Celtic for a season and a half". When he running out in a Barca/Real/City ect...strip.

They paid 12m for him, you can see why, in a few years once he and his game matures he will be a first team player no doubt, the only way they would sell to us on the cheap is if he regresses badly!

Know what was class today as well with the wee man. The respect that Barca showed him with sometimes 4 player's running to surround him on tbe ball, and his lack of respect for our opponents and the name..

Superb player..

We need to kidnap him at the end of the season. He sure is gonna be some player in a few years.

Should just enjoy watching this wee magician whilst we have him.

Marvelous wee player, and I wish him a successful future at Man City when he goes back.

Quality player in the making of he isn't already. Enjoyed hearing him talk about the Astana game today and how despite the opposing left back being determined to hack away at him he would come out on top. Great mentality to have for a young player.

On Paddy, he's a special talent it's clear to see. Amazing how players down in England get hyped up so much while this guy has fallen under the radar especially with the media down there. He's absolutely amazing. The real shame is that he has limited time here, hope we can get in the CL for him personally to showcase his talent on the greatest stage.

Great stuff^!

Loved this one:

Great to read genuine football fans, who love the game, appreciate a talent, enjoy watching him play and wish him well for his future. That's what football team is all about, and maybe Brenda is a good manager for him this season
