Try him out as a CDM per the above posts, doesn't need to be benched, he's still the captain of this team.

If Vinnie is the true professional with the club's fortunes uppermost, and he has recognised that he is going through a bad time he should knock on MPs door and ask to be moved from the back 4 - as lots of people are suggesting to the central midfield. His confidence could return with a rush if he doesn't have the pressure of being one of the last line of defence.

partner mangala and martin and see how they do.
Already seen that and it's decent becaue neither of them feel the need to be a one man defense.

Whilst I think excessive playing has caused Zabaleta to dip in form this season I think Manuel's extreme rotation has played a part in Vinny's demise, and to be honest the same can be said about all of our defenders.

How can our defence gain confidence when they are in and out of the team every week, no top team rotates their defence like we do.

I also think Pellegrini's insistence on playing 4-4-2 with two very poor midfield players in regards to positional sense hasn't helped, there has been at times zero protection in some games and the likes of Vinny are having to step into midfield to compensate and attempt interceptions, yet because of the lack of confidence mistakes are occurring like we saw from Vinny against Liverpool and Barcelona for example.

My thoughts exactly......Vinny's demise is being hugely exaggerated, unfortunately he is suffering due to the lack of protection in front of him,he gets himself pulled out of position in an attempt to rectify our midfield deficiencies and our shape then goes out the window.
The second half against the Dippers he was more disciplined in his approach and he wasn't spreading himself too thinly......and while the rest of the team didn't have a great 45mins,i thought Vinny looked much better.

He's still amongst the very best make no mistake.

Vinny is a City legend and he will come good. This is a blip.

However, he needs a settled CB pairing and some defensive cover from our midfield. Hopefully under a proper manager next season he will get that and we will see Vinny return to his imperious best.

Had a solid second half against Liverpool, which considering we were off the pace all over the pitch is a credit to him.
He's getting too much grief for their first goal as well. Fernandinho sold him way short with a hospital ball. On another day he may have cleaned the player out, doing so could have resulted in a red card or the very least a yellow which with it being so early in the game would have left him walking a tight rope.

As has been mentioned by some of the more sensible posts, there are many mitigating factors as to why he's had a poor season. Injuries, rotating defensive partners, lack of a decent shield in front of him and a manager who insists on defending from the front using a high line trying to Nick the ball early - all of these affect a CB individually so as a collective it's not hard to see why he's struggling with both confidence and performance level.

As it is he's going to get a bit more support from myself. He's earned it with his performances over the last few years and he's still our best defender. He would walk into many of the top sides in the world, yet when reading some of the lunatics on here you'd think he was only good enough for a league 2 club.

Great player, great captain. He's lifted two league titles, you know. He's in poor form but he's being hung out to dry by some useless management.
And a bunch of idle midfielders out of possession

Yep, there's a reason why he's constantly having to press into the defensive midfield position.
