Joe Hart tells Manchester City to wake the dragon

“We need to be a million per cent better — we need to step up,” the England No 1 said. “We can be awesome when we want to be, so we need to be more consistent. That’s what we’re looking for.

“It’s a shame it needs the dragon to be poked before we come out of the cage. We know what we’ve got here and it’s frustrating when we don’t do it, but it’s a long season and we’ve got ourselves into a good place.”

“We used that excuse [against Stoke], so we can’t use it again,” he said. “We probably were, but it’s not an excuse I will use — I refuse to. We have nine days [from Swansea] before we play Arsenal and we have to use that time wisely. We have to get our heads together and start playing properly again.

“I’d say in four of the five games [in which City scored late], we shouldn’t have been in that position where we needed to win in the last minute, but it’s nice that we’ve got that. We need to be seeing games out more and not relying on that.

“We’re in a good place, but we just need to start performing as we know we can, at least seven or eight of us. We know every couple of weeks people will have off days.”

He has become a real leader in the last year or so.

Agreed. Would love to see him made captain. Real fire in his belly.

Indeed. He's already on message with our Chinese friends and is telling everyone that the current captain can't play many games. Ruthless ambition...

If you want to be completely cynical, yes you could interpret it that way. Although stating that Kompany has missed a fair number of games is hardly a stunning revelation.

He's also on message with us as fans. If all the players had the passion of Joe we would be walking this league.
