Player topic: Stevan Jovetic (2014/15)

I think the only reason he's been dropped from the CL squad and the only reason he's yet to have a really good run of form is due to his injuries.

I also don't buy into the idea that he loses the ball cheaply or a lot. For all of the attempts he makes to beat defenders and to get the ball passed them I don't think it's a bad ratio at all.

Is that you Stevan? Seeing as your name is an abbreviation for Jovetic....

I'm guessing the only people telling him he's great are his Mum and Agent !!!

he's shit and the sooner we cash in the better

TBH, it looks like it became a straight shoot out between Dzeko and Jovetic and the boss went with the former for a CL place. Personally I would have gone with Jovetic who I think is a proper footballer who just needs a run of fitness and games to get into his stride.

I've seen enough of him to gather the opinion that he can succeed here, but unless we play narrow with Jovetic, Silva and Nasri behind Aguero I see him vying for the No 10 shirt behind Silva and Nasri and he will have to accept there is also Milner and Navas in competition for the wider midfield roles.

In a way I'm glad he's pissed off for being dropped, but I hope he takes the view that we've stood by him with his many injury problems and its now up to him to consistently show his full potential and to force his way into the team.

Many of us saw something in Nasri when others wanted him gone. It took time for people to understand the benefit of having Nasri in the team and to understand the good he did for us and I can see the same situation developing with Jovetic.

To be brutally honest, I see more reason for us to keep Jovetic than Dzeko, we just need to keep faith with him and cement a proper role on the team for him. His constant injuries haven't helped his cause, but as he's pointed out, has he been injured any more than Kompany or Aguero?

Spot on for me. He is a talented player who has probably tried too hard. One thing he has in abundance over Edin is desire and tenacity. He always has his head up, looks positive and is willing to have a go at the man in front of him. Yes he will be sore right now, but I would want him to knuckle down, prove his worth and be here next season.
Absolutely agree.

Anyone can see the enthusiasm when he takes to the field and its understandable that his first sign of dissatisfaction have come after being effectively put behind Dzeko in the pecking order.

They train together every day and Jovetic will probably feel (with good justification) that's he's a more talented footballer than Dzeko, but I see the decision that Pellegrini has taken as a choice between going with 2 out and out strikers for the balance of the CL campaign in Aguero and Bony or with 3 including Dzeko. Yes, Jovetic can play as an out and out striker, but he's best playing just off the main forward and providing the link between attack and midfield.

If there was a position we could survive with one less player it would have been attacking midfield. After what happened over the festive period, MP probably didn't want to take the risk and go with just 2 specialist strikers which I can accept and hopefully Jovetic can too. I just hope this has been explained to Jovetic and it wouldn't do us any harm if the club made a specific statement to that fact and backed it up by increasing Stevan's playing time on merit in the Premier League to compensate and appease him.

I might be wrong but I think Pellegrini will be expecting to play Aguero on his own, Aguero plus Bony, or Bony on his own, in any Champions League games to come this season, be that two, or more. He is gambling on Aguero staying fit & Bony gelling with the team.

If we need a goal to win/rescue a game at the death, which player out of Jovetic or Dzeko is most likely to come on & score it ? Traditionally it would be Dzeko.

Unless Bony struggles to fit in, I doubt we'll see Dzeko apart from in desperate circumtances or if someone's legs have gone, he's purely there imo because he normally scores more goals than Jovetic. Pellegrini ideally wouldn't want to play either of them.

I can understand how being left out from the CL squad this season would be a downer, but he really should be a bit moire rational about it. We are limited in the amount of squad players we can have, - that will change next season. He has been injured a lot and should understand that it would be too much of an gamble to include him at this stage compared to let's say Bony.

So Stevan, - man up for fuck's sake and do your job. Show some appreciation and gratitude to the club which has stood buy your side all those months outside the team due to injuries.

Right on the money. I agree 100%.

By all accounts they're all better than Aguero in training

If it was a direct decision between Dzeko & Jovetic, put it this way.....

Dzeko fully fit, with a run of games under his belt or Jovetic fully fit, with a run of games under his belt??

We know Dzeko will/has scored goals, big goals at that, when fit and playing.
We don't know if Jovetic can do that because in his time with us he has always had injury problems. In the games he has played he has shown flashes of being a really good player but not someone who would put the ball in the net like Dzeko on a regular basis and when we really need it.

15 mins to go and we need a goal, out of the two of them Dzeko is a no brainer to bring on in my opinion, and that is all the playing time they will be getting unless injuries.

not to mention the Barca game is after Newcastle, so there is no time for a "run of games", not that Jovetic has ever proven to be able to play a run of games, anyway.

Yep, summed up perfectly.

If we play Bony (either as a single striker or in partnership with Aguero), Dzeko is more suited to coming on as a like for like option after 60 mins when Bony tires. If things are going to plan then Dzeko is the better option to have on the bench.

Jovetic might be a better option if we want to change things, if we are chasing the game. But we would have other options in those circumstances. If we're playing Aguero as a single striker we could bring on Bony (or Dzeko) to switch to two strikers. If we're playing two strikers we might want to take one off and strengthen midfield.

Jovetic is probably a better option to have available if Aguero is injured, but given Jovetic's injury record, if Aguero is going to pick up further injuries we dont really want his back up to be someone who is also injury prone.
