Changed his name when he apparently retired from international football.Haha, and he wasn’t nearly as prolific as Andy was he.
He played 23 out of position at LB (he had played LB for Germany in the prior WC but almost all his prior club football at CB). He played one game at CB in a league cup match for us and looked ace. I thought at the time we were missing a trick in not giving him a run in his best position. As we all know know - he was a world class CB and never really played LB again once he moved back to Germany.
We are at a similar point now with Stones / Laporte. Got to be the first choice pair this year for us.
Dunno if it was him or how clueless played him but it was awful to watch unfolding in from t of your eyes at the time, every week the level of disappointment dropped to fucking sordid levels

i saw felipe caicedo playing for lazio against apollon on thursday.....it took me a few seconds to register he played for us back in the day.
He did, big lump of a fella, put himself about in the box a bit but not to great effect if I remember correctly, didn’t he also have a ridiculous run of games with no goals?
Castillo gets a mention in a round the same time, we had a fuck load of forwards around then.
Bianchi (looked the shit breaking scoring records for a kiss poor seria A team before arriving)
Bojinov arrived and looked fucking lethal, got injured, came back, looked full of promise for 30mins, got injured again and repeated the process a couple of times.

Samaras.... our lowest scoring PL season I liked the navy away kit with white blocks on the sleeve, still have it too (Psycho psycho give us a wave, went to my first away day at Chelsea that season too, could only get a ticket in below the city fans, was fucking rough that day at the bridge, Stevie Ireland and willow flood in the midfield that day, sorry I’m getting way off track)
