Players who underperformed at City but were great elsewhere

As has been said, a lot of these players were well past it by the time they rocked up at City.
If we are looking at players who had good careers AFTER leaving City, having failed to make a real mark here, then I’m amazed none of the FOCs have mentioned Stan Bowles. A fringe player at City under Mercer and Allison but went on to be one of QPR’s greatest legends of all time. Ian Bowyer and Colin Barrett as previously mentioned went on to win European Cup medals with Forest.
Joe Royle at Oldham specialised in taking rejects from City for peanuts - Roger Palmer, Tony Henry as already mentioned but later the likes of Earl Barrett and Paul Warhurst who he sold on for big fees. We even ended up taking Kenny Clements back from him.
Coventry won the cup with Dave Bennett and David Phillips in the side while we floundered about between relegation and promotion.
Gerry Taggart is a legend at Barnsley and also very highly thought of at Leicester and Bolton. My main memory of him at City was a disastrous performance at Ewood when Machin picked the world’s most left footed defender at right back. Think it was the day of the Hillsborough disaster? We had a young right back at the time who was well thought of but never got a chance. His name? Neil Lennon.
Yeah mate, Blackburn away. Was there and we got slapped 4-0. Some leg end up there called Simon Garner scored a hat trick i think. But yes Hillsborough was coming through on the radios

Yeah was there at Blackburn that day. We got slapped 4-0 and some leg end up there called Simon Garner score a hat trick, he might of got all four. Just remember Hillsborough filtering through on fans radios on the terraces

Yeah it was a pretty shit day all round, pre mobiles and internet, vividly remember the train pulling into Victoria and the Pink Final with the rising death toll on the front. Someone got a slap for joking about it

Although I was young I remember great things were expected of Paul futcher when he signed with his brother Ron. He only lasted a season. Anyone see him and was he bad for us or was he just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He was a record free for a defender but flopped under Big Mal. He had a decent but uninspiring career after leaving us, mainly in the second and third division. Played on in the league until he was nearly 40 though. Saw him leading Gresley Rovers to the Southern League title as player manager

McMahon - I always expected him to let fly with a tradename piledriver into the top conner but never happened. Was obviously not as good as he was in his prime but I think I expected more.

Charvet - Seem to remember him having a season elsewhere where he was a real threat at right back, especially going forward.

Beardsley - Just didn't see it in him, weird as he was a hugely talented player who performed excellent elsewhere. Maybe unfair due to the mess we were in at the time, but don't think he was right for us and kept players out of the side who had more change of scoring for us, because of reputation.

Clough - As above

Seaman - Maybe obvious but was in decline, to the point that we had to move again for a goalie mid-seaon if I remmeber correctly?

Bony & Santa Cruz - Ok injuries played a part, but never saw anything that made me think we had a player on our hands. I really though RSC could be it though, given his form at Blackburn.

Santa Cruz - injuries I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Bony was just utter wank. One of the worst signings we have ever made.

Always remember a couple of coppers in the ground saying that something was happening at Hillsborough and someone making a comment about the Scouers causing trouble again. It was only later when we found out what really happened
As for the game didn't Machin play someone out of position at the back which caused all sorts of problems

Gerry Taggart, which is where this all started!
