Yeah mate, Blackburn away. Was there and we got slapped 4-0. Some leg end up there called Simon Garner scored a hat trick i think. But yes Hillsborough was coming through on the radiosAs has been said, a lot of these players were well past it by the time they rocked up at City.
If we are looking at players who had good careers AFTER leaving City, having failed to make a real mark here, then I’m amazed none of the FOCs have mentioned Stan Bowles. A fringe player at City under Mercer and Allison but went on to be one of QPR’s greatest legends of all time. Ian Bowyer and Colin Barrett as previously mentioned went on to win European Cup medals with Forest.
Joe Royle at Oldham specialised in taking rejects from City for peanuts - Roger Palmer, Tony Henry as already mentioned but later the likes of Earl Barrett and Paul Warhurst who he sold on for big fees. We even ended up taking Kenny Clements back from him.
Coventry won the cup with Dave Bennett and David Phillips in the side while we floundered about between relegation and promotion.
Gerry Taggart is a legend at Barnsley and also very highly thought of at Leicester and Bolton. My main memory of him at City was a disastrous performance at Ewood when Machin picked the world’s most left footed defender at right back. Think it was the day of the Hillsborough disaster? We had a young right back at the time who was well thought of but never got a chance. His name? Neil Lennon.
