No bud, many apex predators have been documented as acting in a "killing frenzy" when prey is plentyful. One i can think of now is watching a Leopard go nuts jumping on gazelle in a camoflaged bushy area.
Something spooked them and the all bolted through this bush and the leopard was seen to kill at least 9 of them with no hope of ever eating it all.
It's a myth about foxes doing it for fun though. They fully intend on taking all chickens away but generally they are very skittish and easily spooked so the sight of a bunch of dead hens means something disturbed his lunch.
