Political relations between UK-EU

To be fair, I did say I don’t know what you said, I didn’t want to speak for you but the the common view, held by me also, was that fishing should be sacrificed for a deal if needs be, because it’s such a small industry, affecting so few people.

It’s not totally screwed anyway, but even if it was then I said it should be.

The Brexit deal is to blame for the industry’s issues but again, it’s one of many industries and it’s a tiny one.

If it needed to be sacrificed for the deal then it was the lesser of two evils.

These problems stem from a last minute deal that didn’t give the necessary opportunity for all the appropriate due diligence- and whilst last minute is a fairly standard MO for the French/Swiss/Belgium’s I don’t think it was by design in this case as some commentators have inferred. For me the root of this lies in our own internal squabbling in the 4 years between the vote and Brexit - it prevented minds being focused on both sides of the channel. Particularly when we shifted form a weak government that didn’t want Brexit (no majority/May) to a strong one that did (big majority/Boris). I imagine the enormity of the task at hand wasn’t appreciated by Boris & Co and politically the they wanted it done quickly which would give time for this to be resolved and forgotten come the next election.

However despite everything I do think the deal that was achieved in such a sort space (really a year) is a miracle it’s as good as it is and credit should be paid to all sides in that regard. The criticism is think what we could have achieved with an extra 6 months.

classic how it started how its going - this from New Years Day

Yeah, the Govt remains in denial about the Irish Sea border which kind of drives all the public bluster from Gove, but the reality can‘t be denied, the Irish Sea border that divides our nation, and the NI protocols are here to stay and we have to make it work.

The joint statement reflects that reality.

I never saw that argument, what was the logic behind seeing it as a sacrifice if we got a deal rather than no deal?

The Damascene conversion of some on the remain side is good to see regards concern for fishermen.

I well remember the cheering on here when the white multi-millionaire Bob Geldof and his white middle class affluent establishment chums sailed a motor launch down the
Thames for the sole (see what I did there?) purpose (porpoise?) of giving the universally accepted ‘wanker sign’ and ‘V sign’ to poor fishermen and women.

That was the moment when I realised Remain had to be defeated. No matter what. At any cost. That was the moment, on national television, when people like me saw exactly what people like them thought of me.

I’m thankful to say we won.

I guess if V signs hurt their poor little feelings, imagine what fucking their expert trade will do?

Hurt feelings or a thriving business? Tough choice.

The logic was “because it’s 0.01% of GDP, if it’s the difference between a deal and no deal it should be sacrificed” or something generally along those lines.

People, me included were mocking Johnson and the leave movement for being so hung up on fish, when it’s so ineffectual to the UK economy.

Suddenly it’s more important than vaccines to one or two.

I guess the Leave campaign which spent a lot of time trumpeting the plight of the fishing industry decided not to go with ‘Look, if we have fuck the fishing industry for a deal, it’s worth it’ as a slogan.

More to the point how many different sectors are worth sacrificing to get this deal and is there a list of those businesses that were worth the sacrifice.
I do like the narrative that it now seems we did well to negotiate this deal only losing a few businesses to get it. Ignoring the fact this was one of a few off the shelf deals that were on offer for years. This is the one we decided to grab in a last minute panic for the eu to dust off and give us.
We never negotiated a brand new deal and we didn’t even choose the best deal off the shelf of deals on display.
