How can we rate the effectiveness of the UK vaccine? Is it a random variation (60 to90 percent) or does have age related effectiveness?
One does of the Oxford / AZ vaccine is now expected give 70% protection between week 3 and week 12. Most of the vaccines are the result of international collaborations including the Oxford / AZ one. All the ones approved will do the job required of them, namely stopping serious illness in the person vaccinated (after a few weeks) and probably reduce opportunities for community transmission (yet to be confirmed).

There is still a lot not yet certain about any of the vaccines as the trials were only looking at some things,
We know with a reasonable degree of certainty that they are all safe.
Based on mild symptoms the RNA vectored vaccines appear better.
All the vaccines appear good at preventing more serious Covid, however the numbers in the placebo groups becoming seriously ill mean the certainty of the size of the effect is not there.
There is some evidence to suggest they should reduce transmission though again certainty is not there,
However they all genuinely appear to work and work fairly well and may all work very well indeed but we canot as yet be certain.

I fuckin hope so. I slump more as the weeks go by.
The light that i thought was there in dec when the vaccines were approved seems to be dimming at the mo.

Something I posted a week or so ago that doesn't seem to be getting much media coverage (not my comment BTW) is that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should be approved early next month. This is a single shot vaccine based on the same technology as Oxford and the UK has 30 million doses on order with an option for a further 22 million.

This would be a game changer as I could see the under 50s getting this one.

I’ve just watched a short film on BBC breakfast about care homes in a couple of establishments in the north west. All the old dears and staff are shown getting their vaccinations. It was absolutely lovely viewing and the love and care the staff obviously have for their residents was clear for all to see.

Brilliant stuff!
Saw that too. It was very touching.
