They need to know who's travelling just in case we get shot or blown up, then they can tell our poor next of kin the good news, once we are identified. It's that simple really, security yes, even if we present no threat, other than getting shitfaced, but foremost, its about identification. The process that takes the longest after a terrorist attack with multiple casualties, is................., identification, because some people are completely obliterated or maimed to such an extent that they must look at prints, DNA, teeth, or anything else that's left. The threat from terrorism is real, alive and potentially, we are targets, as we are in large groups.
