While I would agree that there are some people that use it for that just like many other things. Most just enjoy having their name or initials on a plate on their car. I have one on my classic car that is relevant to the car that it's on. It has nothing to do with wealth, it's merely a part of the car.

It’s a sad indictment of life and society when you have to advertise your wealth with private number plates…….

I think most times it's quite the opposite. They've got an older car and don't want the neighbours to know how old it is.
