I'd say it's the air admittance valve that's letting the smell out. You said earlier on that you dont use the bathroom that often, how long will it go between uses? I'm asking because if it goes long enough then the water in the trap will eventually evaporate and will let smells pass through it.

Toilet probably gets used once a day max, shower/ bath couple of times a week? Going to get that AAV removed, hopefully that'll fix the problem!

Would all bathroom plumbing be 40mm as standard? I just noticed that there's also a 32mm one on there, and want to make sure I'm getting the right thing.

1-1/2" 40mm on bath waste mate..I see a nut on your waste near the AIV ready for it..

So I removed the air admittance valve, the smell improved a bit, but still lingered. Got another plumber out who had a look at the soil pipe and determined that the durgo valve on there was stuck open. Swapped it over, smell's now gone, he charged me £65 all in. Much better than the 4 grand I was otherwise quoted!

I loved this thread, better than sos diy,I learnt a lot and even had my bath panel off.
Looking forward to part 2 check your roof.

Have you checked the durgo valve? It could be stuck open - I'm in South Wales this afternoon and can call round and do it for nothing if you like ? I know a way of doing it without making holes in your wall which many plumbers do to save a few minutes of their time - the way they do it leaves you with another job to get sorted.
