Professional footballers who don't like playing football

Andy Carroll.

Even admitted when he signed for Liverpool he had to look up most of their players since he didn’t really follow football.

I think most footballers who retire early (without major injures) and don't go into any more football roles including media and agents are not major football fans and don't really like football. Football is the sport that pays most so to many people with thee right mind-set and athletic ability they focus on football. Many of these mustn't like football but do like the lifestyle.

I would imagine there are lots of players who loved the game as a youngster but fall out of love with the game until it just becomes ones job
A former City player I know told me if he was a kid again he doubts he would have been a pro, saying he just loved playing with his mates as a kid and going to Platt Lane once a week. He said he thought he wouldn't want to be in the academy from the age of 7 and practically playing / training every day

Ekotto got pelters for his comments but he was always very honest. He see football as a job and nothing more. He couldn't even tell you an opposition players name even if you tested him. He was always critical of the modern day footballer too.

Paul Telfer never watched football apparently.

I can imagine there's a lot of players who love playing the game for fun as a kid and are so good they make it as a pro but over time the professional demands and intensity turns football into a job. You also get a lot of young players who are the best player on the pitch in every game they play as a kid and it's only when they make it to senior football they discover there are players that are even better than they are and getting to the very top is very difficult. Some players never get over that and just drift.

A few years ago someone connected to an ex City player told me that by the time players get to 30 they're sick of having to maintain a strict diet, constant travel, not being at home at Christmas, not being able to go out, not being able to have drink etc but the money's so good they'd be mad to retire.

When i was playing under-16s & under 18s we won everything we could possibly win in Wales, i was told scouts were watching me etc
We then we went on a tour to Manchester, stayed at the University ,we won 3 out of the 4 games but then played our final game, cant remember who they were but got told a few of them trained with City or United.....we lost but i can still remember their striker being on another planet, i couldnt get near him, this was around 1984.
I went home, played the final two matches of the season & then hung up my boots, never played again. After seeing that kid i knew i just wasnt good enough but the real reason i stopped playing was that id enjoyed pissing about with my mates up to that season where i was asked to join one of the top sides in Wales at the time, i won every trophy going but weirdly i didnt enjoy it half as much as getting beat most games but having a laugh with my mates.
Bet there are loads on here with similar stories, sometimes people just want it to be a game & nothing more serious than that.
