Progressive Rock

For the ones that don’t know Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson yet. This song for me typifies progressive rock. SWs influence has long been unaware. Not anymore.

Am I wrong to think there is a difference between symphonic and progressive rock?

YES, imho a typical symphonic rock band (my favourite album Tales From Topographic Oceans), turned progressive with the albums 90125 and Generator - both fantastic as well).

Wilson is a genius.

i can’t think of any other musician so constantly creative yet prouducing music to such a consistently high standard

Brilliant stuff pal - and it was a real treat back then too - Saturday afternoons Radio 1 took over the VHF stereo from old doddery Radio 2!
Around the same time a group of us in school used to have a radio to listen to the new charts on a Monday lunch break.
I knew Yes had released Don’t Kill the Whale.
I was beside myself when they announced it as a new entry at36 and played a snippet.
Great days Mr Bells.

Don't think so mate. You can interchange the word 'symphonic' and progressive to Yes. Is 'Roundabout' and 'I've seen all good people' Symphonic or Progressive?
I think you are being too prescriptive with your labels.

Thats why it was better to discuss prog in the broad church of the clasic rock thread for me.

My Tormarto story as told to me by a mate of mine. At the time of release he was In a touring band 'Wally Headloss". They had their own bus. One evening after a gig they decided to use the map on the inner sleeve to try and find Yes Tor. Once they thought they had found it, they parked up and partied to the album. Woke up next morning to find themselves surrounded by and held at gunpoint by armed men and Tanks. They were on an actual army firing range. Great story even though, I suspect, a little exaggerated...

Back on to Circus of Heaven.
Apparently this was the start of Jon’s decent into airy, fairy lyrics as borne out by tracks from the Paris sessions.
Imho had they included Abilene instead and swapped the playing order with Arriving UFO it would have been even stronger.

I like Circus of Heaven and the stuff Jon went on to do on Songs of Seven (where it may have better fitted).
Tormato feels undercooked to me.
Agree with an earlier post. Rick's Casio keyboard sound kills the album.
Onward however, is superb. One of Jon's finest vocals.

I’ve got Song of Seven on vinyl and yes COH is a better fit on there.
I certainly think OTSWOF feels as though there is no definitive ending.
Onward has a very special place in my heart. It was played at my wife’s funeral.
Great to read your honest opinions.

Choked up reading that... Played at my baby sons funeral also (along with BJH hymn - even though I'm not religious)..

Australian band Sebastian Hardie.
This is their lovely album 4 Moments.
Lots of mellotron. One of my favorites.

Thanks for the tip off. Enjoyed listening to that. Never heard of them. Love that mid 70s vibe and production. Not many Australian prog bands I know of but Unitopia more recently are top draw...

Great pick up Bill haven't heard this one for a while but as an Aussie music nutter what else could I be takes me back to my teens and played this to one of my school girl flames who wasn't that impressed (LOL).

Had to dump her when in effect she dumped me due to musical differences.

Split with many a girlfriend and wives due to musical differences. My current wife (3rd) has threatened divorce over Gentle Giant. Keeping that one in my back pocket for now ;-)
