Progressive Rock

Australian band Sebastian Hardie.
This is their lovely album 4 Moments.
Lots of mellotron. One of my favorites.

This one Bill is one you would have heard many years ago but perhaps new to a few prog lovers in the UK and US etc that wouldn't have heard of them.

Along with Doug Parkinson this NZ er Charlie Tumahai what a voice not much better to accompany bass and percussion.

Check it out Prog Rock lovers hope you enjoy.

Split with many a girlfriend and wives due to musical differences. My current wife (3rd) has threatened divorce over Gentle Giant. Keeping that one in my back pocket for now ;-)
LOL ( Hope you are not offended ) HOTM by the fact I can relate to your situation.

I only have had two which is one too many (LOL) and I got lucky to some extent with her because she knows if I cannot play my music and delve into all things Blue without condemnation its over red rover (LOL).

Well not quite but I know where you are coming from.

To think she supports Manure and we have been together for 30 years now and raised 2 kids who both support City by the way and one plays in a band that covers a decent genre of prog amongst other music.

Wonders never cease.

Lucky you, but can she take/accept Gentle Giant ?
Brave woman if so. Hahaha

So here are my top prog albums of 2021:

TWRP - New and Improved - daft punk on acid with prog flourishes (if you don't like vocoder avoid at all costs)

Neal Morse Band - Innocence and Danger - best thing he has done since leaving Spock's. Not been a fan of his recent stuff but including band in creative process has added so much

Agusa

For lovers of instrumental in the vein of Camel

Diablo Swing Orchestra - Swagger and Stroll Down the Rabbit Hole - best described as a rocked up melange of genres done with 9 musicians - fabulous and fun.

Dream Theatre - A view from the top of the world.
Only good album by them since Portnoy left. Drumming got more swing, production helps along with some actual 'tunes'

Prog, 'but not as we know it Jim' album of year- Joe Bonamassa - Time Clocks
Blues Prog anyone (come on guys, he use to throw in Wurm into his live sets)

Talking of Yes
Worst album
Yes - The Quest (questionable)

I’m with you on The Quest. Apart from The Ice Bridge it is horrendously embarrassing.

Think the Dream Theater is the best for a while but I liked Distance over time and the self titled more than Train of Thoughts and Six degrees if inner turbulence.
My top 10 for the year
1 Dream Theater -View from the top of the world
2 Transtlantic -Absolute Universe
3 Styx -Crash of the crown
4 Steve Morse Band - Innocence and Danger
5 Robby Steinhardt- Not in Kansas anymore
6 Terra Odium - Ne Plus Ultra
7 Frost -Day and Age
8 Steve Hacket- Surrender of silence
9 Nad Sylvan - Spiritus Mundi
10 Agusa - En Annan Varld

Should have included Transatlantic and Robby in mine as well.
An interesting list....

Nice to see Frost in there.

I have really enjoyed some of the Transatlantic stuff.
This medley from their live album of 20 years ago is a bit special, especially from 8 mins onwards when The Great Escape kicks in. I actually think I prefer this vocal to Hogarths.

I have seen Transatlantic on every tour. Still think the first track off the first album 'all of the above' is their defining moment. Was a time in my life when I travelled all over Europe to see the likes of Flower Kings, Porcupine Tree, Marillion, Dream Theatre and Spock's Beard. The 3rd wave of Prog was biting, saw the likes of Pain of Salvation, Opeth and Riverside emerging as well. Tilburg was a classic venue. My then wife loved this stuff as well so was a great time.

One of my favourite Prog Albums is the Manchester based Mandalaband.
The 1st album is a Tibetten themed wig out with superb guitars. You would never guess they went on to become Sad Cafe.
The second album, Eye of Wendor features 10cc, Sad Cafe, BJH and the Hallie Orchestra in a Tolkienesque tale. Completely daft but brilliant. Recorded in down time in Stockport. It was released at the hight of Punk and disappeared without a trace.
One of my mates is in Sad Cafe at the mo. Barry James...Massive blue too... He was teaching me a few things on guitar at his dads house years ago in the early days of learning to play, when his brother, (Dougie James of Soul Train fame. RIP Dougie) walked in with Lennie Sax from Sad Cafe.

Sad Cafe was my first ever gig at Liverpool Empire 77/78 and still one of the best. Lennie was playing. Fanx Tara is one of my top ten albums of all time. They were a shit hot rock band in those days and the first album has some great Prog moments. They had disappeared by the time of Misplaced Ideals...
