Prostate cancer

What really worries me Rob is it the cost of screening they are avoiding or the consequential costs of higher detection
Who knows. Now that I'm inside the system, I'm looking at things with interest.

When I saw those little stick man logos that presenters wear to shine the light on Prostate Cancer, I never knew what they were or bothered trying to find out. Over the last few years, I have become aware of the idea that you should get tested, which is why I went for the test. So there are obviously campaigns out there to make men more aware.

And yet still it seems that it's up to us men to make the effort to get tested, and anecdotally it seems that doctors are resistant to some men when they ask. Contrast this to the massive screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer. "There is no reliable test" the NHS says, well my PSA was a first class indicator in my case, and whilst I accept that this is not always true, how many are there out there like me who haven't been tested and have a ticking timebomb inside them?

The bottom line is that I feel that is must be about they money, and they are "happy" to let people die because if everybody demanded a test, they might be in trouble, in the same way that banks would be if everybody decided to withdraw at the same time.

Had my biopsy 24 samples taken 8 came back positive for cancer with a 3-4 and a 4-3 reading

Waiting to see the doctor to tell me what grade and what action is to be taken I’m thinking radiotherapy and hormone therapy.

If the hormones cause my tits to grow I’ll be charging £2 a minute I’ll keep you informed of developements

What pissed me off was I went for a full blood tests as part of an over 65 mot as advised by my GP but had to ask and then qualify why I would also want a psa. Remember I had my psa thru peer pressure due to extraordinary number of friends having been diagnosed. At no point was a psa test ever muted by my GP

very similar to mine mate mine was 3-4 and 3-3 which the classed as intermediate risk.i was advised to have my prostate out which i did 2 weeks ago.i was told if you have radio and it comes back you cant have the prostate removed due to the scarring.it depends i think if its spread out of the prostate.whatever you decide mate good luck with it all.i found this thread very informative and some of the stories put my mind at rest.

Sorry to hear that but at least you are on your way to treatment now.

I had 4-4 - fair aggressive. I've had one brachytherapy session, 15 radiotherapy sessions and am on hormone treatment for 2 years. PSA is "undetectable" at the moment, which is no surprise given everything I am taking!

Any info that you need, just shout.

It's a gamble either way. As @A57 the snake says, he had his prostate out but then had to have radiotherapy anyway.

Mine was classified as "just poking out of the prostate" so in my case, a prostatectomy was a no-go.

I'm actually also taking Abiratherone, which is normally used when cancer has spread (which it hasn't in my case) and first-line treatments aren't working. However my oncologist said that the data shows that has a benefit in terms of prevented re-occurence.

The thing is not to be too down if initial treatments don't work. It was explained to me that if I didn't respond to treatment, they have plenty of other options for tackling it or slowing it down. Gives me a bit of confidence should it re-occur in the future.

I’ve just been given an appointment at Royal Bolton in the Churchill unit on Tuesday. Now it’s about the treatment I’ll receive.as I said I will have treatment possibly radiotherapy and hormone therapy.

Good luck with everything mate , onwards and upwards now for you, you’ve got this every treatment carries major side effects but it’s better than the longer picture whatever side effects we have to suffer .
All the best and best of luck.

I was 8 on the Gleason scale with a PSA of 4.6 back in 2017

Like you I had Brachytherapy, 15 Radiotherapy sessions and 2 years of hormones in 2018

6 years later PSA still 0.1

I'm sure rsole will be fine but might need something like Brachytherapy too imo for what it's worth

Rsole - this is all painless by the way, nothing to fear

All the best mate
