Punk and New Wave thread.

I was born in 1964. Loved The Jam and Blondie but the sound and sheer exuberance of The Specials was the closest to my heart. Terry Hall was a miserable sod but his take on stuff at that time was better than anything else. It was miserable and odd but strangely liberating. Said it as we felt it.
Living in Coventry at that time and hating it, I couldn't get into the 2 tone thing at all - and I had discovered punk in January 79 so no way could I be a rude boy!
Back living in Sale in 83 I did appreciate the Fun Boy Three and more so The Colourfield and with time have gone back to the Specials every now and then and beyond the fashion, there were some top lyrical tunes going on there.
Terry Hall ruined it all by coming out as a fucking rag though..... cov born and bred so why not!

1964 was a vintage year mate; ) I quite liked Ska, a little later than punk, but because I'm a fair sort, i'll amend the thread title.

Let's see what ya got!

Lol, not a lot really. Guess I liked most of what other kids did. Jam, Blondie, Specials etc.
A few other tunes stand out...time for action by secret affair was one. And babylons burning. And Turning Japanese.
Happy days ;-)
Great thread by the way, thanks

The only gig I can find of them at the Mayflower was this one / two in 1978 - backs up your Slits claim too.

That was the one, it's just the night that I don't remember.
I found this on an archive site:

Hi Mat & Wayne, I remember going to the Mayflower Club around this time with some guys from Accrington...well, slightly vague memories but I think it was at this this actual event- anyway, I don't recall seeing J C Clark but (almost)distinctly remember The Buzzcocks being supported by The Slits, The Worst and Patrick Fitzgerald(maybe JCC was on the 'other' evening, dunno)... whatever, it was the one & only time I went to this venue and can fully remember being struck by how grotty, smelly, threadbare and perfect the place was. Pete Shelley came off stage, after their set, handing out those little 'another music in a different kitchen' badges to the audience (the innocence and benevolence of the time!!)... and The Worst were sublime!
COMMENT ADDED 22nd August 2008

I must have been at this one because I remember the worst were, well, the worst.
I also seem to remember Patrick Fitzgerald being there. Either way, pretty great City to be in at 14.

Punk was ok, but in time I just found it lost it's shock value. It became almost mainstream, and loads of real shite bands jumped on it's bandwagon.
Specials were much more in tune with what was really going on.

No probs glad you like it mate, thanks. Feel free to add stuff. Your tunes to you are as good as mine are to me.

Not really this era I know, but as we are mixing punk rock & ska I thought I’d leave this here.
One of my favourite albums ever.

Saw them originally in 80/81. Saw them again in about 2012.
Yes, they are brilliant live ;-)
Just like to add saw the specials last night supporting the rolling stones in coventry absolutely brilliant !
Think with practice the stones will be successful too :+)

the jam are the best band from the time and many cross over stuff from 1977 to 1982 they really had no label or tag they was just THE JAM and the kings

from this

to this

and from this

to this

they really covered everything cross the board of music and knocked down the boundaries of punk mod and new wave and stood alone for what they believed in the music
