Punk and New Wave thread.

To be fair mate. When I was leaving Manchester for Canada all my mates used to bug me by saying, "They think the Ramones are punk over there".

Ha. That the Ramones effectively invented punk isn't a matter of opinion. It's historical fact. The term "punk" comes from the magazine that first featured them on the cover.

The Pistols et al don't happen without the Ramones and definitely not without the NY Dolls either -- Malcom McLaren managed them before the Pistols. And none of them likely happen without MC5. Find someplace for Iggy Pop and the Stooges too.

As good as the Pistols were they were an act. Now Wire -- there was (is) a band :)

Young Marble Giants’ Colossal Youth album was big for me. I still pull that album out. Stranglers and Cramps were on heavy rotation.

Good thread. First ever gig was Buzzcocks supported by Joy Division. Aged 14 was meant to be a great day because saw City v Liverpool stood in Kippax with my 2 best friends in the afternoon. Rocker Robinson hit the bar for us then it all went shit and the usual 4-0 defeat. Then off to the Apollo and had told my Mum I’d be back home by 8 or 9. Had not much idea at the time.
I remember Transmission and She’s lost Control but not much else but was fab pogoing to Buzzcocks - 3 minute gems.
Walked back to Piccadilly which was pretty deserted by what must have been 11 pm or so and this Inspector came up and asked “ have you seen a little boy wandering around here lost?” To which I said “no mate”. Arriving home to a frantic Mum and Dad and bollocking she told me she was so worried she rang the bus station so of course the little boy I was asked about was bloody me! I’ve never been little in my life. I’m 54 and still her little boy at 17 stone!! Mind you she’s hovering on 40 stone so you can see why (just kidding she’s 91 and about 5 stone wet through!!)
Saw SLF later that year I think for the first of many of their gigs I’ve seen. Would have loved to see Dead Kennedy’s - Fresh Fruit was fantastic but check out Kinky Sex Makes the World go round. It’s clever

That's a great story!

Anyhoo,
I am informed that the Vermin Suicides
are live in the Railway -Greenfield on Saturday 2nd June.
Songs such as 'Banzai'
'Sometimes I wanna drink myself to death '
and 'Um Bongo' are quality.
Take a look.

I wondered when you'd come along mate.

We've chatted music a few years ago on another City forum if you remember. And I remember you saying you were a smelly greasy headbanger in your youth. And a massive Kiss fan. I now you dabbled in punk, but did you go to any punk gigs in your spadex kecks?; )

How could I forget.

But I wasn't smelly or greasy and didn't go in for headbanging as an activity. No spandex either; although there was a satin bomber jacket.

I steered clear of Punk back in the day but added stuff like the Pistols and Clash much later; plus one or two other bits and pieces. Likewise added some stuff that I guess could be New Wave. I have a fairly broad collection but the bulk of it would be sneered at by punks.

I was only teasing but you know that. I like a lot of different music, a lot of what you like but sorry, Kiss don't do it for me.

I am going seeing Waters though in July. Are you?
