Punk and New Wave thread.

That top 100 Punk songs is pretty weird. There are loads of songs that were around at the time that were liked by punks but don't appear in the list - no Buzzcocks, Slits, X Ray Specs, Gang of Four, Mekons etc

I guess that part of the problem is that there were a lot of music around at that time that may have fit into the punk/new wave/alternative category that may have been excluded if seen purely from a punk perspective. John Peel was playing a lot of different stuff at the time but don't appear in the list - the Fall being a prime example.
That’s a great shout. By 81 there will have been a live and real tension between the original punk from 76-78 and the New Wave that had come along since then. Some drastic decisions made perhaps, by readers who voted and/or the poll organisers.

I culled it off social media, but reading the top it’s a survey of readers to Sounds music paper - if you’re outside the UK or not of a certain age that won’t mean much, but it was one of 3 nationally recognised weekly music newspapers basically.
I used to buy Sounds back in the 80s.
I was just wondering why there was no Buzzocks...but I suppose there's nobody there to answer that.

Not punk per se. ...they were that Stourbridge / crusty sound of late 80s early 90s....but hugely influenced by the Buzzcocks. ...that power-pop sound

Mega City Four

Seen all of those bands and they were part of my youth. Each to their own as they say: )

*Edit.

Hang on a minute, you slating those bands, Billy Idol wore studded jackets. Cartoon punk? Pah! Billy Idol was decent but a bit too glam punk in appearance for my liking.
Not slagging them, just wasn't my scene.
And Billy went cartoon punk for the Yank safe, white middle class audience and did bloody well out of it and good luck to him!

Blitz were a 2nd gen punk/oi band from New Mills Derbyshire forming in 1980. They weren't a big band and pretty much stayed under the radar but I'd be amazed if Greenday and The Offspring weren't influenced by Blitz. I saw them at least twice in the very early 80s and they were a decent outfit back in the day.

Can you shed a light on this 4 band EP I swear I had and Blitz were one of the bands on it. May not have been The Buisness on it but think it may have been The Biz but not 100% sure.
Also a song called Guatemala by some punk band. Tried Wikipedia and youtube but nothing. All early 80's stuff

Please tell me you’re not counting Smash Hits!
Well anyway, the only 3 I remember were the NME (which I read every week), and Melody Maker and Sounds (occasionally).
I'm counting Smash Hits. I'm sure it once printed the lyrics to Last Night Another Soldier by Angelic Upstarts.

But was generally a teeny pop mag.

Agree with the 3 papers you mention. Only vague recollection of Record Mirror.

It was more because it was a magazine rather than a paper, so as a “really trendy” youngster, I never gave it the time of day ;-)

My first two letters ever published were in Smash Hits!
The first letter, they published a Generation X discography and missed out the single "Wild Youth" so I put them straight!

I think i have heard of that EP, leave it with me.

Ah, ok, just checked and that explains it - apparently it went to a magazine format in 82, so my reading and buying didn’t extend before that, hence I hadn’t factored it in as a “paper”, but yep, I do remember the name. (Not since 1954 though ;-)
Record Mirror did the first ever Happy Mondays interview back in 1986. I've been looking for it everywhere as, from what I can remember, it was so chaotic and awkward, the interviewer stated that he'd never interview the band again!
The other 3 music papers didn't feature the band until a year later.
