QF 1st Leg Post Match Thread

I don't think Pep did a whole lot wrong to be honest, regarding team selection and tactics. He had an eye on the Palace game, and the 2nd leg, and wanted to play his cards right with a view on those. Plus I don't think he wanted to make the same mistakes as were made against Liverpool last year, and went for a more pragmatic approach. I thought we were alright overall, but the penalty miss was costly, and a lapse at the back were decisive. If we got a draw, it would have been a decent away result.
Whatever about the team selection, I think his reaction to how the game was going was very slow. Poor you could say.
The two 88th minute substitutions were pointless.

One thing on the rest and recuperation point. We have a good four full days rest before Palace. After that game though we only have two full days rest before Spurs. We have to win at Palace so I expect more of our main men playing in what I fear will be a tough, high tempo physical game. The same players will then probably play again on Wednesday to overturn a 0-1 deficit.

I think Marvin has a point. We showed Spurs too much respect. Away goals are vital in Europe and I think we should have gone high tempo attacking and hopefully scored one or two, then made changes and gone more conservative. Obviously no one can predict if this would have worked but I think us playing this way has only worked for us at Liverpool away in the league this season. They are probably the only team I would advocate these tactics being used, everyone else I think we should stick to our normal game.

Quite a lot of anger on here.

Sure Spurs got a bit lucky and you weren't perfect but still good. The issue seems to be that some of you think it is unacceptable to lose 1-0 at Spurs. That is a little disrespectful. We are not as good as you but we're still pretty good. It is not that much of a disgrace.

I like it on here because there is some civility but today it feels like RAWK.

Frustration more than anything else.

Predominantly the feeling that the line-up and instructions to the players was different to the norm/expected.

If we’d got beat playing our ‘usual game’ I think the responses would be different.

If by this time next week we have successfully negotiated Palace and yourselves everything will be alright with the world again ;-)
